Marty makes some really nice knives. The one I have pictured is 52100 ball bearing steel and the handle material is elk stag. Oh, he makes a really nice sheath also. If interested, I can PM you contact info.

I think Union Cut/KA-BAR used some of the most gnarly epic stag ever used. This model was called "Bearcat" in the old brochures and many have truly remarkable stag handles. Pics are better when clicked on to enlarge.

Nice!! We're not allowed to play with those things much back here in NY. I don't like the many hoops they'd make me jump through just to have one , let alone the hoops I'd have to jump to carry it anywhere. I do have a few nice black powder ones we are "allowed' to have here.

Gunsil, that old stag to us old knifemakers is referred to as "popcorn" stag, almost impossible to find now days. Very nice! TR I like your Bearcat too! I am kind of a Ruger nut also. everyone that posted stag, great stuff!!::tu:: Terry

I have heard the "popcorn" term, thank you! KA-BAR used a lot of it on that particular model, and they in general used a lot of very nicely figured stag on a lot of their knives. This is a salesman's award given by the company to top salesmen, it is a fantastic piece of stag and a super rare item.

Thanks guys! When I bought the antler with the KA-BAR shield I did not know what it was. I showed it to a few folks and found out there is one in a Case family descendant's possession that has it's original silk cord hanger. That one was given to AJ Case as a sales award when he worked at Union Cut Co. Nobody knows what the bottom screw eyes once or were supposed to have held.

Found photos of the one awarded to AJ Case. I would love to own this one but it is not for sale by the family member who still has it.

That is super cool! It looks like they intended to have more awards hang from it. Or maybe years of service? Or a retirement antler?

Gene or anyone that knows, Is that old stag from the sambar deer of India?

Was any stag ever used by a US factory from North American whitetail or mule deer?

Steve, it is sambar stag. I don't think American white tail stag was used since it is not very strong. White tails, mule deer, and elk all have stag with a fairly thin hard outer layer but the inside is very pithy and porous. The sambar is hard all the way through. Ruana only uses elk from near the base of the antler where it is stronger. There are rumors that Case used some American stag, but I doubt the veracity of this. WR Case DID have a compound where they kept some deer on their property but I don't think it was to harvest antlers for knife handles. The Case boys had a big tract of land in Little Valley, they had their own horse racing track too since they liked to race horses.
