Well said Q. and a great tutorial. The pictures illustrate you point perfectly. Yes it is elephant ivory I was referring to. I usually don't like sunfish or toe nail knives except in mammoth and ivory. Their size really serves them well in showing off their covers. And easy to see why you like the scrimshaw knife so much. Here's my only other Mammoth ivory knife (which is actually fossilized Mastodon according to the Case COA)...and one of the "crown jewels" of my mini trapper collection: 1985 Case IV207 SP SSP
Here it is alongside two Case IV207s with Elephant ivory. When seen side-by-side, the color difference between the two types of ivory is pretty obvious...but, it's not always as obvious when looking at a single knife with nothing to compare it to. And, since I am by no means an ivory expert, as far as I'm concerned, it could still easily be mistaken for antique Elephant ivory.

There is very little difference between elephant ivory and mammoth ivory. If you cut a very thin slice and examine under a microscope the average angle of certain 'lines' is different between the two. "Mammoth" ivory is a mammoth tusk that has been buried in the ground for about 10,000 years or more. Usually the outer surface gets stained from minerals in the soil and the inner part looks exactly like elephant ivory unless you make a thin section and observe with a microscope.
Mammoth ivory is not a fossil. A fossil is a rock, all of the cells have been replaced by mineral deposits that take on the outline of the cell walls.
Elephant ivory can also have staining and cracks on it's outer surface which can make it look like mammoth.
I still have a few mammoth knives to post but will not be able to take pics for another 4 days.

Dogleg made by Rick Menefee, Rick made this in 2010 or so and had the ivory for over ten years, nice and thick.

Tom, I learned something about the Canal Steet Coop Wildebeest. I had no idea it was petrified (old?). I thought it was recently harvested and dyed. Regardless it is beautiful.

I have a few more I can post, but am trying to drag it out for a few days. Here is a Northwoods Fremont.

And Kris, you already have a Menefee dogleg with great mammoth and now you are getting Rick to make a second one for you ! I am jealous, envious, feeling left out, Where's My Mammoth Menefee ? If they don't get along with each other, i'll help you out and offer to give one a new foster home.

I have one mammoth knife, a gec 73. The gentleman I got it from said it was rehandled by muskrat man. I really enjoy having this in my collection of 73's.

I have never photographed it so here is the former owners picture.
