Does anyone have any information about the history of the Buck 506 with an astronaut engraved on the handle?

My best friend and wife of 56 years has a 501 Squire that I bought her new many years ago. Didn't come with a sheath for some reason. I can't remember the details of the purchase but I offered to buy it from her several times. It has the script "Buck" and the micarta scales. I recently purchased a sheath for it.

I also recently purchased one off the bay site, with the impregnated wood scales and script stamp on it. It is also in great shape, and I am carrying it today in my bluejean watch pocket. The squire is a great size and not very heavy, and seems to be a great knife for just about anything.

My MBH's (much better half) squire is shown first.

Very nice Leon, your new one was made between 1981 (birch handles introduced) and 1984/85 (Olde English script BUCK tang stamp changed to BLOCK style letters). Enjoy! OH

I like the 500 series also. Here are mine.
The 503 has had a hard life. I broke the tip years ago prying out a fence staple. One day I will send it out for a blade replacement.
The 501 hardly gets used.
The 500 has had a well used life. I used to carry it when the 112 and 110 were a little big for what I had in mind to do that day.

Good looking Bucks Nev52. I've been wanting a 500 lately. I've never owned one but I like the looks of them and the Nickel Silver bolsters.

Here is my meager 500 series collection. Three 503's and a 505. All are from Buck's Custom Shop. The Elk 503 and the Buckeye Burl 505 are the only ones that I've used so far.

I think you will like the 500 Duke. It is a good knife for work. Not as big and heavy as a 110 or as wide as a 112. I have also carried it hunting perfect size for a lot of jobs.

I stated in this post earlier I was going to send the 500 and 503 out for blade replacement. I got them back from Buck!!! They look like new knives.
Great company to deal with.

You can send your Dad's 503 in to Buck for a Spa treatment,tell them it does have sentimental value and they can fix the lockup. They may have to replace the lock bar. If it's the blade that is the problem they may be able to re-cut the notch. If they can't they will let you know before any blade replacement.Either way a Spa treatment is only $6.95 and well worth it.

If you are patient the Micarta handles variations show up at reasonable prices, check here, check Blade Forums in the Buck Knives for sale section and check eBay (my LAST choice). All of the Micarta handled 500 series knives were early and had the Olde English style BUCK tang stamp. In fact when Buck switched to wood laminate handles they still made the 500 series with the Olde English tang stamps for a short time. OH

I just received my first 501 for Father’s Day and it may have started something...just pulled the trigger on this one. Looking back this is how my obsession with the contract stockman started!
