All About Pocket Knives

Cal and Tom, those are some incredible knives! Tom, your one-of-a-kind collection is amazing! I was wondering, wasn't the 36OT the same configuration as that 34OT with punch? Maybe they went ahead with it and didn't give her the credit!

What a pleasure it is to see these knives you've posted. The letter opener sure got my attention. I knew Imperial made letter openers but didn't know Schrade had.

Nice rare Schrade's everyone, some real special knives have been posted.

These 3 are probably the rarest I have, the Barlow is not particularly rare but it's little used condition and early tang stamp puts it in the hard to find category.

Pretty much the same thing I thought about my 863 KON-KAV, except for the wool sock thing. I don't know how scarce they are, I just know what a bear it was to find one I could afford in decent condition.

Jerry what are the handles on your 863?

These are hard to come by as a whole set, many thanks to a member here that spotted and picked them up for me. (By the way sportcolbs has a minty full set on ebay right now, for those interested)
I haven't seen another cut co daddy barlow, maybe it's not particularly rare though. Not the best condition but it exists.

It has been a pleasure see the rare Schrades posted. My knowledge of Schrade is limited, but I haven't let that stop me from obtaining a few. This knife is marked Schrade Walden NY and is not marked with a pattern number. It is 3 1/2" closed. I have no idea if this knife is rare, or even unusual in the Schrade realm. Based on the blade that is similar to a punch, I believe this knife might have been intended for a typesetter. It is indeed a typesetter's knife. I think it possible that a cutler just re-ground a punch blade on an 890 open-stock to make them. Knice knife!

What is a typesetter?

Keith, your age is showing a little bit (lol). Before computers overtook the world commonplace things were much more mechanical. A typesetter was a person who arranged the individual metal letters into a frame in a printing press. It was very tedious work with very small objects. The modified punch on this knife was likely designed to "pluck" the individual letters out of the printing press.

Keith you aren't the only one that didn't know what a typesetter was. I've seen several schrades with the typesetter blade, very interesting.

I have a set of 5 Grand Dad's Old Timers.
The one at the top left you don't get to see to often. ( SCHRADE NY USA 1080T ).I pick it up a few years ago.

You are right about the little one. rarely seen. Good show! The little one in the red bone set is equally rarely seen.

Here is a Schrade Cut Premium (Texas pattern) stock knife no. 08883 with oblique bolsters. It is 4 inches closed. This knife has seen a lot of use with the peach seed handle high spots worn smooth. However, it has been well cared for and the mechanics are excellent with great snap and no play on any of the blades when fully deployed. Just a very well made folder exhibiting outstanding Cutlery craftsmanship.

Schrade Walden made some knives in the 1950s that were not catalog knives (This is knews? lol). Here is one that had been made pre-war, but here it is again as a Schrade Walden, made for a hardware chain perhaps.

Here is Schrade CutCo's competition with CASE 5375/6375. Not too many around anymore.

Thanks Cal for the nice compliment--much appreciated! Your junior cattle knife is wonderful--how do you beat that peach seed jigged bone so nicely displayed on your folder? They don't get much more useful or handy than the cattle knife or Stockman pattern. Schrade Walden knew a good one or a winner when they saw it
