All About Pocket Knives

Here's a couple more of my toting HOKS. A 5249 and a 4 line Camillus scout.

Here's my favorite HOK during deer season, which will be over on 2/26/17. Some of y'all have seen her before, a 1960's #39 Queen, the years when there were no tang stamps only an etch. It has dressed a pile of deer over the years and even today I split a long piece of Seal Tight flex to make jury rigged grommet to protect a hydraulic hose going through a sheet metal panel on an old tractor.

Here's a couple of Boker USA knives I carry from time to time. The stockman is a fairly recent addition, bought from one of our fine store owners here at AAPK. Both of these knives take a scary sharp edge.

Threaded slant bolsters are not seen on stockmans often enough IMO, nice ones Phil.

Here's one with a little bit of a story behind it. I bought this knife from an old gentleman named Ollie Howard who used to swap and sell knives at the local stockyards each Friday when cattle sales took place. He always kept a roll of knives with him and was constantly on the lookout for a customer. He soon learned that I was a knife lover. One day, 33 years ago he spotted me coming and said "Come here boy, I've got something for you." as he opened up his knife roll. I picked out this shiny new German Boker congress knife and made it my own. (for a nominal fee of course)

I put away the Case stockman I'd been using and began to carry this new congress knife. I liked it a lot. It was easy to sharpen and held a good edge under fairly heavy use. I carried it for a couple of months and one day it came up missing. I looked high and low but it was nowhere to be found. I had to dig out my old Case stockman and put it back in service. I was totally bummed out. A few weeks later when I was putting new mineral blocks out for my cattle, I discovered my missing congress knife lying in the wooden tray that held the mineral salt blocks. I'd cut the plastic wrappers off four salt blocks and laid the knife down then sat a salt block right on top of it apparently. If you have ever experienced what salt can do to steel, you can imagine the condition my formerly "new" knife was in. The blades were rusted shut. I had to use pliers to open them after soaking the knife in oil overnight. It took a lot of elbow grease to sand the blades back into usable condition and lots of opening and closing the blades as I flushed the joints with oil to get it working smoothly once again. I knew it would never be the same but I was still happy to get it back. I sharpened it up and put it to work again.

Some time later I managed to break the tip off one of the sheeps foot blades. I had to regrind the end of the blade to make it functional if not beautiful. I've been more careful with this knife in the years since, and it's ridden many a mile in my left front pocket. I'd estimate I carried it for 20 years or more. It's mostly a reserve EDC now days but I still love this little congress and carry it from time to time just for old times sake.

HOK's that I carry. The big ol Premier lockback goes in the back pocket any time I'm wearing jeans, which is most every day but Sunday. I can get to it and open it with one hand. Either the 63047, the 3318 or a 6318 is in my right front pocket, depending how the mood strikes me.

Most of my pile would qualify for this thread, but these are the ones I spend the most time with.

This Remington R100A is my favorite HOK. I carry it from time to time. Still lots of life left in it and the bone handles have a warm, rich look and feel. Good snap too and the blades get really sharp.

Yep, sure is, and still has the Remington etch on the blade. It is a REAL one!

Half my collection are HOKs but this unknown 3 9/16" jack that I bought from knifeaholic is one of of my favorites.

I almost forgot about my little peanut I carry it at least once a week. Love the smooth old bone!

This hok is in the middle of a sharpening session.

I guess you could call this one an honest old knife.I picked it up awhile back in an antique shop complete with chain and button hook for $10.Boker's Improved Cutlery with the tree on the rear of the tang(ca1915).Some cracks in the handles taken care of with cyanoacrylate glue and a bit of cleaning and I can hook it to my bibs anytime.

K7K $10 for that is a swell deal.

I know it's nice to have high quality or rare knives tucked away but "Knives are made to be USED!"
This old "Southerns" Western Castrator out of Sheffield has done it's fare share of what it was made for

I dug these old HOK's out while I was doing my edc . Case 35 1/2 from 1971 and a Modern folder Stryker from 1998

So many beautiful knives in this thread!

Most of my knives can be considered as HOKs and here is the one I cherish most.
It was given to me by my father in law and I will pass it over to my son in a while.

Here's my Kershaw Folding Field which has led a hard and active life.

Gosh, Phil, what do you mean 'previously'?

Most of my well patinated knives were bought used with the patina already in place, my penchant for buying stainless knives means I don't have too many where my use formed the patina. This Kabar Medium Stockman is one that is all mine; I bought it new at the MCX in late 1998 and carried everywhere until I retired from the ARNG in 2005 - it has been across the USA from the Mojave Desert to the Atlantic and all the way to the Syrian Desert, with stops in Europe as well. It is honorably retired on a shelf in my office. OH

Cal I was borrowing that phrase from a used car commercial.
