Well by some luck I was able to guess what this strange tool was.

True to his word Mike came through and delivered the goods and the P.O. brought me this little gem just the other day. Not quite as obscure as the OP tool but many people tend to misidentify what these are. I remember one particular antique dealer getting rather irate with me for telling him he didn't have an antique, civil war surgical field instrument.

I have owned a few of these along the way and do like them. This ROGERS CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY with smooth bone handle is no exception. I believe the "Her Majesty" stamp would date this eraser to Queen Victoria and make it a c. 1837-1901 cutlery item.

How did these work? Didn't the inks back then absorb into the paper but lay on top? TIA.

My understanding, which is based on nothing more than hearsay, is that they were used to remove ink from vellum. Back in the day.

Thanks Joe. I think I know what that is but I should check with Google.

I found out I didn't know what vellum was. Its calfskin treated and then used as paper way back when. What I thought was vellum was that black kraft photo album paper.

Steve, I'm not sure my information is valid, but that is what I recall.
