Hey guys, I would appreciate some continued prayers for my father in law.
He is not progressing as well as we would have hoped. He has been working the rehab program, but they discharged him yesterday and are moving him to an acute care section of the hospital. He is dealing with congestive heart failure. He has swelling of his extremities, and they are worried about his low BP. He is also throwing up a good deal.
Someone I talked to at work said when this type of thing happens, that things tend to continue to go downhill. I'm no doctor, and getting info from up here is spotty.
Thanks,
Glenn

Patients, especially elderly ones, sometimes do get into a downward spiral from which it is difficult to extract them. I pray that is not the case with your father-in-law.
Given that he had coronary stents implanted prior to his surgery, I would be. Concerned that one or more of them has closed off, causing him to develop the CHF you mentioned.
He needs to be seen by his cardiologist again.

Thought I would update this situation.
Well, my wife and her sister are returning this afternoon from spending the week down in Florida again. Their father was really not getting better. He was released from rehab and sent back to the hospital with fluid on his lungs and an infection in his leg. He hasn't been able to do any rehab, or even sit up in a chair.
They were this close to putting feeding tube in this week, but he is making some small progress now, and were able to get him sitting up yesterday. The girls felt bad about leaving, but had to get back up to NH. He may be well enough to get back into rehab in a few days. Honestly, though, this is all up to him. Nobody can work the program but him now. He seemed to be spending all his time complaining about how horrible everyone is doing their job, but refusing to take any of the responsibility himself for the lack of effort.
Now my wife is twisted up with guilt because they left and aren't there to work with him. I know it helps when they are there to prod him, but they really shouldn't have to coach him. He should want this for himself more than they do. It doesn't sound like he has thrown in the towel on life, he just needs to do his part.
I'd appreciate some continuing prayers and thoughts for Al and his daughters.
Thanks,
Glenn

Thanks guys.
Now, to top it all off, we have struck out at 2 rehabs that won't take him because his new medication is "too expensive".

Well, they moved him to ICU last night. I think they are going to have to start dialysis, as his kidneys are not functioning efficiently. They also talked about connecting him to a ventilator if his breathing does not improve.
This doesn't sound good, I pray that he has the strength and determination to fight through this, but I fear he has given up. Hopefully God is watching over him and will provide a guiding hand.

Well, my wife and her sister are heading back to Florida today. Things are not going well. Her father had a mild heart attack last night. They've basically said there is not much more they can do for him, and that the girls should get down there right away.

Glenn,
Praying the Lord will be merciful to your father-in-law. As you posted Saturday God is providing a guiding hand, He is in control and He gives us grace to get through difficult times.

Prayers must be working, at least somewhat anyway. He is doing better, albeit with the help of oxygen and dialysis. He's not getting any worse at this point though, so that's good.
However, they are not sure if his kidney function will return, or if he can get well enough to breath on his own without the oxygen. So, it doesn't look like he will be able to return to rehab or travel anytime soon.
Thanks for your prayers everyone, please continue, we need em!

Well, I thought things were going pretty well. My FIL was well enough to be transferred to a rehab, and he was doing okay. Then his BP tanked, so they weren't able to do his normal dialysis, so they sent him to the ICU.
I guess he's back on a breathing machine, and they gave him a cocktail of medication to try to elevate his BP. They can't do regular dialysis, so they want to try something known as CRRT. Basically, I think it's some kind of slow alternative dialysis for CCU or ICU patients.
The girls are heading back down to FL, not knowing how bad things are for him.

glenbad,
Sorry for your family's loss but as the Word tells us, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". This gives us all great hope as death once again invades our ranks.
