Sweet Southington's, Joe, really like the pearls and agree with you on the appeal of the long pulls on the last one. Also beautiful worn bone on the jack. Nice old brass handled jack, Tony! Very sturdy looking gunstock, Mark, and very nice bone and great bolsters on the English jack!

Joe - I haven't looked thru all my Southington knives but my Southington MOP whittler has long pulls through the tang and with the same curved tang stamp, but than again I have long pulls stopping at the tang on a big stabber jack and a swell end smooth bone and a match-striker long pull (not through the tang) with the same curved stamp.. My Southington MOP pen which I will get pics of eventually has long pulls but they stop at the tang and it is the straight-line Southington stamp... I'll have to check my others noting tang stamps - though in the end whether the knife has curved or straight-line stamps is most likely NOT going to lead to dating those knives during Southington's years in the business ... it perhaps was related to the cutler doing the work ....

Lee, I agree the curved or straight line stamp may not tell us much.
I think the long pull through the tang may indicate an early production.

I recently posted my Empire Stabber Jack and got some photos of my Southington Stabber Jack. Closed length of 4" and ebony handles with all metal components... long pull on a spear point, stamp is abit worn on top of curve, and while the choil indicates little sharpening it is the way it was sharpened with emphasis on front half of blade.. funny thing is I originally thought someone "played" with the choil to make it look less sharpened but looking earlier at many Southington knives it appears that is how other Southingtons were made in terms of a steep and well formed choil... nonetheless - well used but not abused knife with deep double swedges & still hard snapping and tight! Again I like Stabber Jacks - just remind me of jumbo Boys knives ...

Great Southington's everyone, not an easy knife to find.

Here is an unusual large jack I picked up awhile back, bone on the mark side, stag on pile side, straight line tang stamp on main and curved stamp on remnants of the pen. No evidence knife has ever been apart.

Great old jack, Lee! I am very partial to bareheaded ebony jacks.

Here's another Southington that caught my eye long ago ... A teardrop Jack in MOP at 3 & 3/8" closed - that is a fair amount of MOP on this knife and one does not see that many jacks at this size with those handle covers ... Long pulls on both blades and nice shield... The knife was no doubt used but was not abused (and probably lightly cleaned but the liners still retain lots of original finish) ... Thanks for looking!
