All About Pocket Knives

That clip blade with the nick out on the end is a common Utica trait. I have a cattle knife like that.

I am still trying to find out more about the relationship of Utica Cutlery Co and these two brands, Iroquois and Seneca. It appears that they started them up during the depression to sell cheaper knives, and then shut them down in WWII, but I don't know that for a fact.

There's not much information about it on the web.

The seller doesn't bother identifying which is which. Says they're all "for repair".

Here's a Seneca Cutlery scout knife

That's a nice Seneca. I'm assuming that's the deep grooved black composition handles like Utica used. Very shiny, glassy and with deep-veined stag-like grooves. Interesting stuff. I like the can-opener, too.

Well. I bought that Seneca with the lousy pictures. Took a chance for $15. It's actually better than I expected. Beautiful gold and black striped celluloid. Used but not abused. A little stiff, but it snaps nice on half stops, typical Utica nick out on the end of the master. The stamps a little messed up though. Looks like a "32" below the Utica, NY.

All in all, not a bad deal. I was pretty sure it was better than the seller's pictures showed.

No. I only bought one. But I figured doing a thread about them would be interesting and educational, since nobody ever talks about them and they don't have a subforum for them.

But if it bothers you, I'll stop. I just thought some might find it interesting.

OK. We can do tang stamps if you didn't get enough on all the links and pics on this thread.

There's not many, since these two brands were only running for about 10 years or so. I think all the Senecas are the same. But there are two different Iroquois stamps. One with the straight line "Made in USA" underneath, and the other, which I think is older, that has the "Iroquois" inside an oval, with "Utica, N.Y." wrapped around underneath. I have not looked them up in Goin's yet. But I'll check the next time I get a chance. Maybe there are more?

Seems there's at least 3. Notice in the previous example, the big "I" that extends over both lines of the stamp. Sometimes that's on the cheaper cell jobs, sometimes it's this one.

I think this would be called "Marine Pearl" celluloid, sort of a fake abalone.

Here's another Iroquois tang stamp that I never saw before. It has "Cut Co." underneath.
