Note that both Schrade and Camillus made Buck 301 Stockman knives have a long nail pulls (as does the 303 Cadet), while all the Buck in-house built 301's have nail nicks. You will find a lot of variation in the Buck in-house 301 & 303 knives; early two spring variations, followed by three spring with brass liners, and finally three spring with steel liners. Also flat ground blades (early) and the current ones with a spine on the side. Here is a date sheet to help you decipher the codes. OH

OH,
Wow, that's a lot of info! Thank you for taking the time to pull this together.
I have a notebook that I use to hold printouts, photos, etc. of things about various knives that I run across.
This whole thread is going into it!
Just by looking at eBay, I'm surprised there isn't more (older) 300 series knives for sale.
Also, the prices don't seem terribly expensive.
For the last few years I've been focusing on 60s and 70s German knives, like Eye Brand, Buck Creek, Kissing Crane etc., but the rising prices are forcing me out.
Hopefully I won't be going crazy, buying every Buck in sight.
But I think I will be expanding my collecting interest in that direction.
Thanks!

All this research and talk about 301 variations has gotten me stirred up - found this NOS first variation Camillus built Buck 301 on another forum and bought it; should be coming in from VA later this week. I don't have one of these so I'm glad to have noticed the variation. OH

Keith, this thread started with a question concerning SMKW special run Buck Knives. Here are a few that were not in Buck's catalog, were made by Camillus for SMKW, and only sold by SMKW, with Buck's concurrence. They are hard to find, if you see one grab it. The black handled Barlow is a Camillus marked knife, the yellow handled Barlow is marked Buck. I thought I had a black handled version of the #322 Congress coming from Jay's Knives a year or so ago - but after I ordered the knife they called me and told me it was a mistake, that it was gone from inventory! Oh well, still looking! OH
PS These are not my knives - I don't own any of these, these are photo's I found on the web and downloaded.
