All About Pocket Knives

Here's another old Hammer Brand I've had for a while but just snapped some pics of today. This one is a full size stockman, 4", tang stamp indicates '45-'55. You'll notice it's not a shell handle either, solid construction, pinned scales and bolsters!

...figured I should drop this one in here too. I found it listed in an old catalog as a Junior Jackmaster Serpentine Dwarf!

Tang stamp dates it from '38--'41, the seller referred to the handle pattern as "duck feathers", not sure if he made that up or if that is what it was actually called though! It is a tiny little knife as you can see in the last pic, measures just a hair over 2 inches closed, but the catalog didn't lie, it is sturdy indeed and snaps reaallly strong for such a lil' fella!
Perry, I bet you have a bunch of these in your accumulation don't ya? Got a pic or two to share?

That's a winner right there Mike and pretty hard to find. Built just like it's daddy is! I have one myself.

...Here's my latest...This first one is so 'purty I had to post it over in the knife photog section as well...kinda looks like giraffe pattern scales... And this little guy is one I haven't seen before, only measures in at 2 1/4" closed, it is copper colored, thought perhaps it was brass, but after a gentle rub down some silver color started to show through, so I'm not sure what it is actually! For such a tiny lil' fella, it is surprisingly sturdy and has good snap and a sharp blade....

Nice Mike! I have one close to the first in handle material, in a cattleman pattern. That's an early Hammer Brand knife right there!

Here's a newly arrived Hammer jack....pics are kinda lousy, but it's a cool looking little knife that is solid as can be...

Thanks Perry....she was hidin' out on the Bay, I was the only bidder, snatched her up for 4 bucks plus shipping. Just had to clean off a little bit of accumlated grime, blast out some wads of pocket lint, give her a few drops of oil, and she came right back to life. It is amazing to me how well these old Hammers retain their walk and talk....this one, like most of my other old Hammers, snaps like a gator.

Fantastic lookin' Hammers, Rick, wiseguy and Perry! The variety of handles designs and patterns, along with the solid construction and fine steel really make collecting Hammers fun...never know what you're going to find!

Here's a new pick up...I'm figuring this pattern would be called a half congress?
Snagged it out of the Bay, where it was listed as a "tobacco knife", but at 3 1/4 " closed, I'm not really sure how it could be of any use in harvesting or preparing tobacco...
Not a pattern that I've seen before from Hammer Brand anyway, thought it was kinda cool!

Right you are Mike and she's a beauty!

Cool knife Mike! They call it just a plain "Congress" in the catalogs.
The 4 blade one is a hard one to find and yet even harder is a 4 blade with
a nail file! If you guys ever come across one that isn't in very good shape -
as long as the nail file isn't broken... PLEASE point it out to me!!
They can be repaired fairly easily. Heck, as far as that goes, ANY Imperial
made shell handle with the nail file blade IS RARE! (with the exception of
the vest and gent's knives)

Something else to point out on that congress - it has a shield!! That's a factory goof!
The Hammer Brands DID NOT have a shield and the Imperial stamped knives DID!
It's not all that uncommon thou - they were produced side by side in the factory.
You will find many different patterns that are mixed up as far as the shield goes.

Mike, looking back thru this thread, that black handle solid construction Hammer Brand
you have is a bit of an oddity!!! Note the square bolsters - that is a Schrade frame with
Hammer Brand blades!!! Never seen one like it before. It's something we should
bring to the attention of are resident Schrade historian... AKA: Dale! If anyone would know
or even have an educated guess - he's the man! There are many more Schrade guys here
as-well. So's how's bout re-posting it and lets see if someone can identify the frame pattern No.!
