I don`t know how to date these at all, but if you go back to page 1 I posted a link to the F.Dick company which is still in business. Maybe if you drop them an e-mail they would know

When sharpening a knife (q.v.) the edge is effected, basically, in two ways:

1. The stone actually removes metal and should not be used unless the edge is actually visibly damaged.

2. The steel actually straightens the microscopic edge, which has a tendency to "roll", back into a straight edge again. This makes the knife "sharper" without removing any metal but by turning the sharp edge straight again.

In extreme cases the edge if very old and worn can look "sharp" but actually be very dull. In this case the stone should be used to hone the metal.

So, use the steel unless you can see defects on the edge!

I am more of a freak about sharpening implements than the implements you sharpen on them I think. I regrettably sold a few of my F. Dick slicks a couple years ago, here are some I still have. The middle one is a very old Forschner, the other two are F. dicks; The smallest one gets the most use. I have seen some of these with a very slight texture, not rough like the steels you commonly see in carving sets, but just a faint texture like on a Schrade fs-1 honesteel. I have had good luck with those, the very coarse ones like are commonly found with carving sets I have not had much luck getting a satisfactory edge with. My dad picked up an oval F. dick slick recently that I really like, alas I have yet to talk him out of it. I guess I'll just have to find my own eventually.

I sympathize muskrat man,it becomes an obsession.I started out looking for one short stag handled steel for a project.Now I think I have a dozen or so all kinds and am looking for a slick. Then got started on vintage stones that led to this lol-

Is that one of the old nortons in the cast iron box? I'd love to find one of those. I like that they can be bought cheap at flea markets then refurbished. and it's kind of a surprise each time because most of the time they are so gunked up and caked with oil you can't tell what they are unless they are in the original box. I have dozens of stones. I like razor hones the best.

Yep,that's one of the old Norton cast iron stone boxes.Just picked it up a couple weeks ago. LOL Kinda the center piece for my budding vintage Norton collection.Lotta variety in those razor hones,only have one so far.It's kind of a cross collection as I like Keen Kutter/Simmons Hardware stuff-

Figures, you only got one and it's one I've been after, a green one! lamo very nice stone.
