robeson...not to be a pest...but i met a man in prescott...tall, thin, educated, multilingual...older than dirt...
i was talking to a beenie and this old fellow interrupted at the point the beenie said he was special forces...
" no son, you were not special forces, you were attached to special forces..."
now this started a pissing contest...and the beenie is hopping mad...so, the old man pulls out his OSS id card...
then comes back later the same day, and shows me his OSS wings...and some other non- commercial items only available to someone who done the deed...

as i understand it from the man who was one of the first...
the army was the first to train and attach members to the special forces..which were the spooks...

but thanks for serving

First is a Imperial U.S.A. (U.S.Army ?)...second a Camillus Medical Department U.S. Navy.

The OSS, Office of Stratigic Services, was one of the predecessors of The Army Special Forces. Col. Aaron Bank, the principle founder of Army Special Forces, was a former OSS officer that had been dropped behind German lines to establish, train, supply and direct a partisan anti-German force during WWII.

Actually, the CIA is the most direct modern descendant of the OSS.

The Army Special Forces traces its roots to the First Special Service Force, and adopted its native-American arrowhead patch as part of the design of its own patch in 1952.

The older guy in your story was wrong. A man that goes through the Special Forces Qualification Course successfully and is awarded the MOS qualifier for Special Forces is, indeed, Special Forces.

While there have been many persons in certain necessary MOS's attached to Special Forces units over the years and even so today, the men that are SF are SF.

Maybe the subject of your story was an attached individual.

If the older gentlemen was intimating that one had to have been in OSS to be Special Forces, he's dead wrong.

I do not think the term "special forces" was even used during WWII or Korea. Could be wrong on that, I wasn't around for most of that time period.

Here is what I got...

This is the only one I have. There are no maker markings on it anywhere (including the bail). Someone told me who most likely made it but I didn't write it down and now I've forgotten.

I would love to get my hands on one of those WWII, bone handled, USMC utility knives. Like yours JohnnyR but with USMC on the shield. Unfortunately when one comes up for sale, the $$$ always seem to get in the way.

I wish my memory were a little better but I'm going to say neither Camillus nor Ontario was what I was told. It was a name I don't hear very ofter but recognized when I heard it.

I should take some fresh pictures. I cleaned up the handles with a toothbrush and Fast Orange. At least the handles look 100% better.

Bingo long and the traveling all stars! There ya go. Kingston. That Dimitri swings a mean hammer. He hit the nail right on the head again. He's my favorite memory cell.

Here is another nice old Ulster utility knife, late war version with the safety can opener.

A pair of Camillus's...the easy open may be millitary...not sure...the U.S.A. is for sure.
