Just to add to this story a little, I found a patent number on the box that I recieved and asked Bernard Levine to look it up for me. Seems the patent was applied for in 1922 and then approved in 1927. HUMMM!!!!!! The American Hone company was disolved in 1928. A person by the name of Vaughn was the inventor of this sharpening device and was from Wisconsin. No mention of New York state at all. One can only speculate as to how this transpired at this time. I can also assume that I may be the only one that really cares But, that's OK because I really like this sort of stuff and maybe someday, someone else might want to know. Just and update.

Well, since no one else bid on the hone I did.
I will post some pics if & when I get it. I can always use it to sharpen wood working tools in my shop.

The US gov has made it pretty easy to look up patents. When you have a patent # you will be able to look at the original design of the item. Often there are additional patent numbers that you can then look up to see what preceeded the item. You can also look up patents by company, inventor and a host of other fields. Gets addictive but we are all the addictive types.

Larry, can you look up patents by date?? There is some confusion about a Napanoch patent for a harness punch. I have a copy of patent 884,350 that supposedly covers this double-fluted punch, issued on Apr. 7, 1908. The patent wasn't applied for until Dec.24. 1907, but I have a double fluted punch with a pat'd 1-29-07 date on the back.
This seems to be a discrepancy, and I wonder if your search tools and skills can shed a little light?? A picture of the knife is in the "S&R by Napanoch" thread just below this thread.

Yes you can search by ISsueDate. Seems 705 patents were issued on 01/29/1907. patent # 842158-842848
I used the advanced search and entered "isd/01/29/1907" in the search box. I was surprised by the numbers.
We can also add classifications and names to attempt to reduce it.
Guess we need to look a little further. I'll see what I can dig up tonight.
I believe a few of the Schrade knives were stamped with this date as well.

Hey, thanks for the great info. I called them and talked to the son of the original owner, Chuck Johnson. His father Merle bought the company from Ka-Bar in the fifties. I thought this odd being the corporation was disolved in 1928, but that doesn't mean that they quit production. No doubt Ka-Bar saw and opprotunity to make a dollar selling this equipment and formula to someone and did so. His story matched the one on bladefourm to the word. They stopped production three years ago when Lois Hyatt died. Lois was the only one that made them for the Hone Company and no one could do it the same as her. The technique died with her. So they quite making them. "sales were slow anyways" and sold on the stuff off. An anitque dealer bought all the Olean Stuff. RATS, beat me to it again. Is this fun or what They now sell beauty and barber supplies. Mr. Johnson was a great guy to talk to.

Sorry to drag up a thread from 18 years ago, but I thought this may help shed a little light. I came across this photo of a box from American Hone Co. located in Tidioute, PA. If nothing else, it helps add a bit of historical reference to this topic.
