All About Pocket Knives

This is my Back Pocket knife. 6 inches OAL.
I made it several years ago from a blank from some supply house (Jantz I think).
I made the sheath so that it fits perfectly in the back pocket of a pair of jeans.
I use this knife a lot when I am working in my shop or in the yard.

I put on the brass bolster and the cocobolo wood handles.
I got the knot work at a knife show. I haven't figured out how to make them yet.

Here is one I picked up a while back. A nice bird & trout knife.
It has Winterbottom bone handles & it almost looks as if it were missing the guard or bolsters.
OAL 8-1/2"

Does anyone have a complete one I can compare it with?
Also does anyone know what year it was made?
I can't find that tang stamp on any of the Queen tang stamp lists I have.

Dale, the big Q with a crown and no other marks was used between about 1932 - 1955. If the blade is about 4 1/2 inches long, I will guess that yours is a #96 fillet knife (not to be confused with the #96 folding doctor's knife). If that's what it is, there is a picture of it at the top of page 501 ofthe 7th edition of Sargent's Knives and Razors . It had a cap bolster that fits on the shoulder of the handle.

Dale, here is a comparison, although mine is 9 inches long.

Plus, it has real plastic scales.

Oh, and speaking of smaller fixed blades, I have these:

Queen, # 74, .... 7 3/8"

Case xx, M3F, .... 6 1/4"

KaBar, .... 6"

O.K.,? or KaBar...Case...Queen...

here's a couple of little ones! Think I'm going to put these up in the trade forum. Looking for more odd/unique fixed blades.

They are German, marked Solingen Germany

I found a couple more while looking for something else.


The Western is a 628 from the mid to late 1980s, during the Coleman-Western era.
They were nice looking knives, though I like the carbon steel of the earlier Westerns better.
OAL - 6-1/2 inches.

This Ka-Bar has a story, or the original knife I bought had a story.
About 1971 I bought a Ka-Bar 1228 at the Navy Exchange at MCAS El Toro in Santa Ana, CA.
I took it with me on a hitch hiking trip to Oregon.
After I got out of the Corps, I used it as my fishing knife.
Sometime in the late 1970s I left it beside a trout stream high in the Cascade mountains in Oregon.
I looked for a replacement but they had been dropped from Ka-Bar's line.
The finally reintroduced the pattern and I got this one about 2004 as I recall.
It is a great bird & trout knife.
OAL - 7 inches.

Ist pics are Oylmpic knife dated 1959,missing the cap on the hard leather scabbard.

This little A.G. Russell is 6" OAL with a 2 1/4" blade. The sheath is heavy 1/8" leather and very pocket friendly. The knife is sharp as sin and handy as a pocket on a shirt. Now and then, I slip it in the hip pocket of my jeans in case I'm pressed into kitchen service and all that's in the knife drawer is a used up Ginsu.

For several years, Russell listed this knife in the middle of his catalog. Since I don't get the catalog anymore (apparently they expect you to buy something now and then to keep getting the catalog) I've searched his web site several times and don't find it so I'm guessing it's been discontinued.

I made it from a Jantz blank about 5 years ago.
Brass bolsters & cocobolo handles.

I made the sheath for it from very stiff, heavy leather.
It fits perfectly in the back pocket of my Wranglers or Carhartts.

OAL - 7 inches.

I saw that earlier in the tread. That's a nice little carry knife. Beauty job on the sheath. I noticed you said you don't know how to make the fobs. Wasn't there a tutorial somewhere here recently on making fobs?

Too bad Russell quit selling the one like mine. They weren't much money.

Spot on WJ. Good eye. The heritage of that little straight knife is indeed Nippon.

Just spotted one of those little Russell hip pocket knives on eBay this morning, only I believe it's a little older than mine. They're both Japan. It's kinda funny because they started the bid at $19 and if memory serves me (which it often doesn't) I think I bought mine new for $16.

I have one just like it that I've had for close to 20 yrs. or so...it's the Woodswalker. AG still offers them and has them in stock...$22.95 w/leather pocket sheath. A bargain in my book and one handy little knife, great for a bird & trout knife.
