All About Pocket Knives

Lazy Saturday morning and I got out these two to carry. Winchester moose with some real pretty colored smooth bone and a calf roper in desert ironwood.

Today I'll begin test driving my new Buck.

Gregg, I thought the Jack AND the Pen you had yesterday were awesome but that Moose & Calf Roper are pretty nice, too.

Another wet, SS type of day here. And any day is a good day for stag, too.

Great Eastern Cutlery. Its a model 82. Its a single spring knife so its nice and thin. I use that wharncliff blade the most.

Well Charlie, it is doing okay. Yesterday I used the sheepsfoot to cut some thin plastic that my Case was not dealing with effectively and I had recently sharpened the Case. I don't much care for the synthetic material used on the Buck covers; don't like the hand feel. The feel of my Ulster Stockman has it beat by a mile. Also prefer the little bit of extra heft the Ulster provides.

Sorry you're not liking it much. I haven't tried one like it but this Buck 309 at 3 inches closed is one of my favorite watch pocket carries. It has the black phenolic scales and good heft for such a small knife. Takes a wicked edge too. However it is a bit small for my XL meat-hooks.

Charlie, is your Buck U.S. or China made? To add to my estimate: obviously the most important thing for a knife to do is cut. My Buck arrived with considerably above average sharpness and so far cuts with noteworthy ease. If it holds its edge reasonably well then I will warm up to it.

These are the two that I currently use. I use the larger one most of the time but the smaller one goes in the pocket if I am not expecting to be doing any work; a sort of Sunday go to meeting knife.

Maddogg them Griptialans are great carries,i carry one at work this weekend I broke in a new to me Buck Muskrat great user and easy to carry

That 72' Case sure is pretty, the bone from that era has striking depth of color. I grabbed a 73' jack recently that has that same color, too hard to resist.

My little Buck is USA made from 2007. I have two Chinese Buck canoes but I have them in the small Asian section of my collection and have never used them. I have another small Buck that I frequently carry (pictured below) in my watch pocket. It's a model 055 introduced last year and at 3 3/8" closed is basically a shrunken 110. Haven't had any trouble keeping it sharp either. Buck uses two different stainless steels that I am aware of, 440C and 420HC. The Chinese Bucks I have and the USA made 309 and 55 all have 420HC. The 110 and 112 I have are 440C. So the quality of the blades on your knife should be consistent and are probably 420HC stainless. Hope they hold up for you in true Buck fashion.

As an addition to what I posted a little earlier, I was looking through my latest SMKW catalog and noticed that some of the Chinese Bucks were listed as having 420J2 stainless blades. I'm not sure what the difference is, I'm not familiar with that one and don't have any knives made from that particular type of stainless that I know of.
