Wow Mike, that Portland Cutlery Co is a real eye-popper!
Goin’s has some info in it:
c. 1911-1925. Located in Portland Oregon. Paul Steinimetz was president.

I think it was a hardware store brand in Portland Oregon.

Thank you Dale! I was thinking it must be Portland Maine because I don't hear much about west coast cutlery companies. It is a beautiful knife and going on 100 years old. Very strong snap on both blades.

I wish you lived nearby I'd stop over and show it to you. ::nod::

I wished you lived closer too, I would love to see your collection!

Actually these days Oregon has more cutlery companies than any of the other state.
I posted this some time ago, but will post it again for those who missed it-

Good post Dale thank you. Being mostly into vintage and traditional style knives I wasn't aware of all those companies until I read the news story and checked your links. Those William Henry's look pretty nice. (though maybe a little out of my price range) ::tu::

I agree Mike; too pricey! The William Henry plant is about 20 miles from my house.
I am in their neighborhood often enough, just never cared enough to stop at their shop.
The stories I have heard from people who said they had been in there have failed to inspire in me a desire to visit. ::skeptic::

On the other hand I have been inside the Benchmade factory before they moved up to Oregon City a number of years ago. I was extremely impressed by what I saw. I even got to watch some of the machinery operating. Benchmade is very impressive from Les de Asis (the president) on down. Pretty classy folks.

I have been inside the Kershaw plant a couple times. Even though they had curtains around many of their high tech machines to prevent industrial espionage, it was still impressive. You could eat off the floors there.

Started this post and then this box of rocks crashed.

Saw Coast Cutlery on your list. I bought one of their lockbacks quite a few years ago. This puppy is slick as a whistle. It's a smooth operator. The only knives I have that come close are Kershaw's. Opening, closing and lock up are all smooth baby, smooth. I like it a lot. Made in Japan.

Jerry,
It may have been made by KAI Cutlery, the mother company of Kershaw. There are lots of very high quality knife companies in Sakai Japan, sometimes referred to as the Solingen of Japan. The old Al Mar knives, before Al Mar died in 1992, were made in Sakai by Huhey, (sp). Al said he was the finest maker in Japan. I know the new owner of Al Mar does not use Huhey any more, or so he told me. I am not sure who makes them now.

There are a lot of fine knives that come from Sakai!

They still put out a model that's very much like mine but at $20, I doubt it's made in Japan anymore.

With this Hertage S&M set I have plunged into the Queen/S&M world of knife collecting.

They say a 100 yr old original jig from S&M was used on the one in the upper left hand corner.

They all are reproduced as exact as possible from a 100 yr old S&M catalog somebody found. A reprint of the catalog came with the set.

I'm sure y'all already know this info but I just wanted to share this with y'all
