All About Pocket Knives

I scored this commemorative Walker Colt set at the show this weekend. It is called the Sam Houston pistol and is authorized by the US Historical Society.
I guess is true that 'shinny sells' because this just caught my eye.

Thanks. I think it is a beautiful pistol. The set is missing the nipple wrench but I understand they are available so if it doesn't sell quickly I'll pick one up. They don't seem to be expensive.
By the way, I was not able to make contact on the rifle we discussed. I'll make another effort on that during the week.

Jerry, I'd like to know your impression of that spotting scope over the next few months. I need a better one (I've got a very cheap "Winchester" made in China that a gun shop owner gave me ten years ago). I don't want to spend an excessive amount of money - I only use it at the range for 100 and 200 yard shooting, want to go up to 300 - 500 yards. OH

Will do Bruce. Initial review from range trip yesterday...
First, Glad I bought it. As I said, will save money in ammo. Saves a drive to the 400 yard target to see where I am hitting. Even hard at that range with the shoot and see targets which are pretty darn expensive.
Great glass. Vortex Viper line is second to the Top of the line Razor model. The Viper HD I bought runs about 900 bucks + 250 or so for the tripod. The Diamondback line is still excellent quality and I think scope similar to mine runs about 400 bucks. They may also have other lines that are a little bit cheaper.Don't overlook their rifle scopes also. All I've been buying. As I said in a previous post a while back, their customer service is second to none.Lifetime transferable warranty, No receipt required, no questions asked even if you fumble the damn thing and drop it on the cement, they will fix it for free. When I sent in my scope for repair, they paid overnight shipping both ways. Shipped the scope on Thursday and I had a back Tuesday morning. One person is your only contact. No getting passed around department to department.
I only used it a hundred yards so far at the range, will update once I've had a chance to use it more and it .

Question re' the 1873 Winchester in .22 caliber. Were they the standard size for a 73 or were they smaller.

I seem to recall having seen one that was a downsized boy's rifle.

If they existed as such, got to be a premium piece and I would love to have one, but I'd have to find it at a yard sale with an ignorant seller.

They are a smaller frame. But larger than like the 90 frame.

Coolest old gun I have, is this Winchester Model 92 Saddle Ring Carbine, made in 1903 and shipped to the New Mexico Territory. It stayed there and was a work rifle carried in a rifle scabbard on horseback, roaming the outdoors with the rancher. I purchased it from a family member many years ago. It's chambered in .44-40 and still shoots and operates great! Action is tight.

Here's a cool photo I took with one of my Colt SAA's with stag grips, El Paso Saddlery holster/belt with .45LC ammo, proper hat and jean jacket. Ready for action.

Let me share a little insignificant history about 2 of the Winchesters I posted a few pages back.

The 1892 32-20 rifle that I posted a has a short story that accompanies the rifle through at least 3 owners.
There was a rumor this rifle was bought at Bumby Hardware in Orlando, Florida. The rifle was made in 1911, I figure it was purchased 2nd hand by my wife's uncle in the late 40's or early 50's. We know the rifle was sent back to Winchester to be reconditioned in the late 50's. (no paper work)
My wife's oldest brother really liked the rifle as a boy and their uncle gave/traded? it to him in the early 60's. This brother-in-law and I were in 1st grade together and graduated high school together in '64. He joined the Sea-Bees, went to Nam, came home, married and then he married again and again, 5 different wives that we knew about . ( He passed away at age 48, quite an interesting funeral ) During the time with wife #4, she took a likin' to a Willy's Jeep Wagon that I had. She just had to have it so I asked my brother-in-law if he still had the Winchester? Surprise, surprise!! He said yes and if I would deliver the Jeep he would trade me the rifle.
I've only fired it a few times since it came into my hands. As sorry as it is, ballisticly, I know there were several deer killed with the old rifle. I should take it to the shootin' house and on doe day when one of them ol' nannies is about 50 foot away, pop her in the head .

The 1894 30-30 was made in 1952. It was purchased, new in Michigan by the brother of a neighbor. He had the 30-30 and the original box of shells, less 4 or 5. It sat unfired for about 30 years. The neighbor said his brother killed a couple of deer with it and put it away. I traded an old piece of a horse trailer for it in 1985, never fired it.

Quite a few of my guns have personal tales that probably wouldn't interest many folks other than family, but I figured those two Winchesters might be worth mentioning.

I love those stories. I have a 1873 Winchester. 38 wcf. Postal grip deluxe. Set trigger. Half octagon. Button mag. Case hardened. Found under the floor boards of an old Wells Fargo mine office. Factory letter I sent off for States it was sent special order to a Wells Fargo agent in 1883. How does a gun like that ever end up under the floor of an old building????

Cool story! the '73 under a loose floor board, must've been part of the mine defense plan or something like that.

Great stories. I like that the history follows. I think I've posted a picture including my model 94 long barrel 30-30 that was my Grandpa's, passed down to my first cousin, who gave it to me when he was in Viet Nam. My cousin passed away from cancer. When he was a young man he dated Miss Wisconsin for a while. I used the gun for a number of years deer hunting. Never could hit anything with it. I have a number of "family" guns and they will go to my boys some day if the government doesn't get them first. ___Dave

On the modern side, I built this AR earlier this year. Match barrel, adjustable buttstock, EoTech holographic, Burris 3x... and also added the H&K VP9 LEO. Both are fantastic!

Nice guns, all. I have a Winchester '94 in .30-30 as well. Mine was made in 1952, and was my Uncle's. I know he took a few deer with it in the 60s and 70s. My Aunt passed it down to me back on the early 1980s. I have probably only run 10 shells through it in the past 30 something years.

I think I posted a pic or two of it way back in this thread somewhere.

Here's one you don't see every day...

Winchester Model 71: Mine is the plain version(not Deluxe), made near the end of the model life cycle, in 1954. The Model 71 was only ever chambered in the 348 Winchester and was the only production firearm ever in that chambering. Which makes it an odd duck. It has been prized in the PNW and Alaska as a powerful enough lever gun for big game, that can easily be stowed in a rifle scabbard on horseback.

I handload for it, using Barnes Original 250gr lead core bullets.

I have a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 with a non working scope (reticle is broken) and a Winchester 9422, both of which would have a new home if I didn't hate selling so much.

I also have a Model 94, in the angle eject version or 94AE. It has very nice upgraded Walnut furniture. Beautiful lever gun!

I know the feeling. I'll trade most anything but to sell it for cash almost feels like a sin.
