Check this out....I seen him coming down the fence and pulled out my knife and he went dead at it...
Careful, they are strong! I don't know if one that big could take off with that knife or not

but...

I would not want to risk it...

Scott, when I was a little feller in Orange County back in the late 40's and early 50's those things were everywhere. Seems like when they started showing up they were almost black and quite a bit smaller and then they grew into the big rascal that you had to fight off! I do remember they had a rather powerful kick so we didn't mess with them too often. Seems like most time when you threw one in the creek or canal that would simply swim to the shore without a fish looking at them. Not so with a regular green grasshopper or a black cricket, they never made it back to shore.
Some times the roads had short sections totally covered with those smashed by the cars and trucks. Made us think of the plagues in Egypt mentioned in the Bible.
Thanks for jogging my memory. We don't see them in our part of the Panhandle too often.

Old Zeus found a water hole, and out in the desert that is a HELL of a find! I made a find too... let me search for the photos on that one...

A few years ago Philco bombed me with this Condor fixed blade. I took the knife and Phil (in my thoughts) on my 7 mile walk today.
