Ok, the top one is marked Gudedge Solingen and I'm still looking for any info on it. I've been told its likely pre - WW2 but that's all I got.
Number two is a very ground up Wade and Butcher that I bought for a camp knife, until I found out its likely pre war too!
The third is my favourite. It's a little Pal Brand, not Pal Blade, which I think is pre 1935. It has a wooden handle.
So, there they are. Not terribly pretty, but oozing character and history. These knives have been places and done things! I'd rather have a battered old beauty than a pretty, but soulless, new and shiny blade.

Pretty is as pretty does and I bet each one of those will do what ever is asked. Wonder how many different peoples fingers they have cut. And of course what they have been asked to do.

Hi all! I have too many fixed blades in my collection to post at once, but here is one that is puzzling me right now. This E.C. Simmons Keen Kutter fixed blade is pre 1940... that's about all I know lol. It's not the prettiest knife, but the etch is still beautiful! It is surprisingly comfortable and still razor sharp. I plan to make a leather sheath for it from a 1940's keen kutter I have in my collection that fits very well, and it will be in my shop once I get a little more info. Please message me if you can tell me anything or if ya wanna snap it up! All beautiful blades too guys and gals... I think I spent 2+ hours just reading and drooling over the 156 pages lol! I'll post all I can, as soon as I can.

Yes, I've wondered what they may have been up to! I was told by the seller that the Pal was through the war. Kinda makes ya wonder...
Oh, and just to clarify, I have nothing against new knives. You folks with the skills to make your own turn out some real beauties! As a matter of fact, I'm waiting for my son to make me one. He loves doing that kind of thing.
Unfortunately, his current place has no workshop. I'll definitely post it when I get it!

A misconception about the G46-8... while it most definitely WAS used extensively throughout the western Pacific theater, it was NOT an issue knife, per se. Meaning that it was never procured via contract through the military supply system.

Western was not granted a contract for the 1219C2/USN-MK2, so they came up with a knife "just a little bit bigger". Sales were through the PX system and through "unit purchases".

During WW2, military units had a lot more discretion in what they bought than they have had since then. If a unit was about to ship out, and something they needed was not available in the supply system in time, unit commanders had discretionary funds to get what they needed. Knives were one of the items in short supply early on in the war. Western, being in Boulder, was a lot closer to the west coast than all the "major" cutlers back east.

One of the tales about Western is that on more than one occasion some unit about to deploy would contact Western needing knives. Western would throw a case/crate of knives on a train accompanied by Harvey Platts (Harlon's son) or some other company officer to personally deliver the knives to ensure that the knives arrived at the unit ordering them and to collect payment directly. Just one of the reasons Western was favored by our Pacific forces, especially the Navy and Marines. San Diego, Long Beach and San Francisco, major naval stations, and Camp Pendleton, half way between SD and LB, were just an telegram/overnight train ride away.

98K, Very nice loveless, I've been a admirer for many years, just couldn't afford one. I have his book Knifemakers with Bob Loveless and has inspired me to get started making knives, I have to admit, I copy his designs quite often and his sheaths also. Also just bought R.W. Loveless Knives, A Collectors Dream by Joh Denton. Excellent photos. Thanks for sharing, Terry

I'm with you, I can't afford one either! This one is a counterfeit copy that I got off ebay.

Long discontinued, this Cold Steel Bush Ranger is my all time favorite outdoor adventure knife. Incredibly sharp for either a production or custom blade. Comfortable, tough, quick. It is a high point in CS production. Blade is 7 1/2", handle 4 1/2".

Ken98K, I thought those pins looked a little weird, he never used mosaic pins but most of his were what I call "birds eye" type or on some of his really fancy knives they might have been engraved. Bob is probably the most copied custom knife maker around and he didn't mind being copied, he said it was a complement to his work. Terry

You're certainly showing off some fine stag, Zed! I especially like that last one you posted.

This one is nowhere near as fancy as yours but I've had it in the field a couple of times since hunting season opened and it has proven to be a very handy tool. Since it is a very affordable Case with synthetic handles, it is a candidate for re-handling at some point.....when I get off my dead arse and start working in my basement shop again.

I believe one of the things he was famous for was his handle bolt system, I see they are still available.

I've also read that he did a lot of copying himself in his earlier days.

When I rehandled mine, I was surprised to discover there are 1/2" holes under those factory scales.
I machined some 1/2" x 1/4" bushings from aluminum stock.

Bob did not think it was ok to rip off his designs! If a maker asked him, he would provide a pattern, Jim still does that in the shop. Copying his logo is counterfeit, just like making a T. Bose slipjoint design and stamping it with a T.Bose stamp. Tony gladly provides patterns at request also.
