Hard to tell, is that cap bolster teardrop and pinched? --- Along with slanted and lined.

Thanks and yes to all of those. I have a catalog picture of it but need to dig it out. I looked for one for the big Moose knife but could not find it. I believe that knife is the same frame as the Kit Carson big camp knife they made, it had the same shield

Bill, the handles according to the Utica catalogs I have are called Pyralin. Below is something I got off the internet about what it is.

Pyralin is the name of a plastic created in the late 1800's based on nitrocellulose. Nitrocellulose, also known as celluloid (see scrimshaw.com “ivory boom“), was one of the most extensively used plastics of the time.

The first letter in the pattern number, 4, denotes that it's Pyralin. Hope this helps. Great knife!

michaelspayth, REALLY like that last/bottom knife!

My Question: I think I posted this knife when I first joined AAPK. I don't believe I ever received a definitive answer. What company made this knife?

It has been in my family forever. It was probably my grandfather's to begin with and I've had it since 1982. There are absolutely NO remains of any markings or tang stamp(s). The shield is pinned and the match strike/nail nick is inside the awl/punch if those are clues. It's residence, up until I got it, would've been Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties in New York State. I really would like to know about this knife.

Is it a Utica??

That is one great knife and a hard one to find. As most of you know Utica's are one of my favorite makers. Here is a catalog cut of the knife.

This is the first time I looked through this post--awesome knives! I'm a huge fan of the Utica Toothpick/ticklers/ et al. I collect this pattern and have pretty big pile of them. The handful of Uticas--mostly contract knives for other companies--rank high among my favorites. I've enclosed a couple photos below. I also have a couple questions: Is there a fairly representitive catolog out there that you guys are speaking about? I've seen a few pages here and there in some of the classic early collector's books but never a stand alone catalog. Also, the I've always suspected the Western States Jack knife below was a Utica contract knife--do you agree? thanks in advance for your help!!! --Robo

Picked up another nice Utica. Pretty neat alligator on the front handle. Of course I love the etch and has salesman's number scratched on the back of the main blade.

Mike, how old is this one ? 1950's ?
Were there other animals on the handles of this pattern ?
Wonder if these were sold in gift shop of a Florida golf course ?
I like pen knives of any pattern but most get little collector interest.

Found this really cool picture of the Utica Cutlery softball team!! I know a few cutlery companies had teams.

I play alot of Senior softball in AZ, Utah, NM and Nevada so this is a cool one for me.

Not all UK&R knives were made in Europe. If it is not marked with a European country of origin it is American made. UK&R contracted with Union Cut Co for hunting knives, I don't know who made American pocket knives for them. Most UK&R fixed blades I have or have seen were made in either Germany or Czechoslovakia other than the ones made by Union Cut Co.
