Enclosed is an uncommon model on a few levels. Made by H.G. Long in the mid-1800s, this lock-back folder is fairly large with a handle length of just over 6 inches. It also features a recessed blade lock which is less common on old Sheffield folders than raised lock-tabs. But the most unusual feature are the folding hand guards which are seldom seen on vintage Sheffield folding knives.

Bill, four very nice pearl IXLs. And a great variety of makers and styles posted after them. I like them all but, a few in particular are the double gunstock, the jigged bone handled Joseph Rodgers, the Ibberson stockman and the last IXL Celebrated. In my limited experience, I have not seen jigged bone on a Joseph Rodgers. Is that unusual?

Thanks Dan for all the comments!! That’s a great question about the jigged handles. I’m sure I have less knowledge than you about it. I believe that tang stamp was 1870-1900 or so, but it has England so it is after 1890. Maybe Dimitri or someone will know the answer about the handles? I don’t collect any certain patterns or maker, 90% of mine are pre WW1.

There are some wonderful examples showing up in this thread.
This one is stamped WEISS & SON / 62 STRAND. It's 6 1/8" closed and 11" open. Has fancy threaded integral bolsters / liners. And also sports a recessed blade lock like the knife Mason posted a few pages back.
I found some info on this cutler from an old issue, June 2009 Knife World.
From 1787 to 1811 they were at 42 Strand
From 1811 to 1822 they went to 33 Strand
From 1823 to 1868 they worked at 62 Strand
After that they were at 287 Oxford.

Here is a well used 4 1/8" Champagne Pattern knife with "The Melton" deeply etched on the main blade. It has the old style corkscrew that looks like 2 strands of steel wrapped together. The Champagne wire cutter blade has serrations on both sides of the edge. The Button Hook blade seems unusual for this pattern. On the back beside the corkscrew is a stout hollow tube tool that i do not know it's function or name.
It did have slide in tools at the master end, likely a pick & tweezers but they are missing now.
Tang is marked "ART" in an oval beside "Geo"/Butler & Co./Sheffield"
The back side of the Champagne Wire Cutter blade has a logo of a diamond shape with a circle on top of it and "I" "3" "E" and "M" and 3 ? other letters i cannot make out.
