jerryd6818 wrote:~Q~, any background on those Select knives? How do you tell when they were made?
Case began making the SELECT series knives in 1998 and has continued to release a limited number of chosen patterns (approx. 15) every so often ever since, but I do not know if it is done regularly every year on a consistent basis. Because the knives do not carry the usual date tang stamp, it's not easy to determine the date of manufacture of a particular SELECT model. Without the original box bearing the ID label, probably the only way to be certain of the date would be to contact the Case Historian.
steve99f wrote:Great looking mini's guys. Q does the Select mini trapper have nickel silver pins as well? Hard to tell by the pictures. ::tu::
Yes, both the liners and pins on the SELECT series knives are nickel silver.

Although there's no date tang stamp on the Case SELECT Mini Trapper, both blade tangs are pattern stamped.

Here are the Rough Rider Mini Ts I decided to try. They're OK, I guess...certainly not as nice as a Case knife, IMO, but for the money, it's hard to complain too much. They're super sharp right out of the box, no doubt about that. I especially like the locking clip blade on the jigged white bone with the battle axe shield...first and only time I have ever seen a locking mechanism on a Mini Trapper...so, that's pretty cool.

~Q~, what a fine group you've rounded up there. Have you always gathered tang stamps other than Case or have the Case 07 varieties pickin's become so slim you've been forced to branch out?

Thanks, jerryd. Actually, my Mini Trapper collection was originally limited exclusively to just Case 07W models; unfortunately, Case doesn't make enough of them to satisfy my voracious insatiable collecting obsession. So I was forced to expanded my collecting parameters to include regular 07 models with handles I liked (there's certainly no shortage of those). Once I started down that slippery slope, it wasn't long before I began adding Mini Ts of other brands besides Case...which, I might add, had never occurred to me until you planted the seed in my head with your Rough Riders. Very glad you did, too, since it has opened up a whole new Mini Trapper universe just waiting to be explored.

Apparently, I'm getting old and starting to repeat myself; I already have this model, but I couldn't pass it up for the price...$40 (and I was the only bidder).

I fell for the threaded bolsters on this Case 07 in Walnut Bone and just had to have it. It's been on my watch list for over two months. The pictures don't do the handles justice.

And then this RR with metal handles grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Since it wasn't much money.......... ::facepalm::

I've said more than once that I'm a Magpie. Drawn to bright colors and shiny stuff I just couldn't resist this Pacific Rim beauty. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Thanks John. A year ago, I would have told you, "I'm not much on the trapper pattern", but the 07W got under my skin and the other 07's were not far behind. So easy to get hooked on this drug we call knives.

Just discovered this in another thread:

So, according to that chart, my Bermuda Green SELECT 6207W is a 2001-2003 release.

I just noticed that the seller is practically in your backyard; Springfield (or would that be considered your front yard?). Maybe after you win it, you could take a "short hop" right on down HWY 39 to pick it up in person and save yourself the $4.36 shipping fee!

I posted this in the Case thread and it just hit me I should probably post it here too.

"A high school graduation gift and "You're in the Army now." gift for my youngest grandson. Yes, I did try to persuade him to join the Corps but as long as he's happy with his decision, I guess I'll have to be happy with it too. He graduates High School on May 23rd and ships for Basic Training June 4th. He's finally going to get that haircut I've been giving him grief about for the past 3-4 years.

Ran the knife over to an old Marine jeweler acquaintance of mine as soon as it showed up. He's going to engrave Jayden's initials on the mark side bottom bolster."

The picture doesn't do it justice. In hand, that Burnt Walnut bone is spectacular.

Well done, jerryd. Nice to see the old tradition of passing knives from one generation to another being continued. Hopefully your grandson will appreciate it. Kids nowadays are sometimes hard to figure out. Years ago I gave a very nice knife to my then girlfriend's son as he was going into the Army. He flaked out of Basic Training after only a week. When I asked him about the knife, he just shrugged and claimed that he'd "lost it." Now I wait until someone gets through BT before giving them a knife.

Well, they can't have them in Basic Training/Boot Camp anyway so you might as well save it until they graduate and have some respect drilled into them. They may not be able to have them at their next assignment. It all depends on the individual base command. I'm fortunate in that this grandson is hard working, polite and respectful. His mother raised him well.
