Nice comparison of nice knives Joe ... indeed those shields match as does much of the knives... I was under the impression that Wilbert knives were made by Napanoch and Empire and wasn't aware that Challenge made knives for Wilbert as well - or is it a matter of the shields being outsourced from another company that supplied many cutleries? I know there were a few companies that supplied the bone etc for handles which were used by many but was there a company that also retailed shields? Just curious if anybody knows

Good questions about the shield. I would guess that cutlers made their own shields in house.
Maybe we'll get some other comments on shields.

I know some companies no doubt made their own shields - some had their own unique shields and one can see slight variations on Federal shields as one example across companies - but the shields that are exactly the same across cutleries is what prompted my question... I don't mean to send this thread off-track but those examples of the Wilbert and Claus shields had me thinking if there was also a retailer of shields... Maybe this is best posted on the "Got Shields" thread under Knife Lore...

Nice additions Dimitri ... The Remington Bullet and Marbles particularly caught my eye though the Weidmannsheil-Weltersbach is pretty cool - spring loaded?

The Weidmannsheil is not spring loaded, though it looks that way, when you depress the lever it releases a pin that goes through the tang, some have a hole in the blade that acts as the lock. I like this one better without the hole in the blade, looks better and is stronger IMO Another thing I don't have a picture but this one has a shield on both sides!
