This stone belonged to my dad's business partner in the late 60's. He was older and was selling the feed business to my dad. It always sat on the counter and I was fascinated with it. Doesn't have any markings but it is hard. He called it his honing stone. I was fascinated with learning to sharpen a knife so he taught me. His wife gave it to me after he passed in the early 80's.

Welcome to AAPK Beinglis23! I can't say one is any better than the other, my Pop showed me how to sharpen many years ago and he used mineral oil. I use both, when I sharpen with water I will put a few drops of Dawn in my water. Honing oil is mineral oil and can be a little messy.

His knives were sharp enough we'd let him trim our fingernails.

There are numerous posts in this same thread about sharpening with both. Obviously both methods work. I think if you read through those posts the majority of those who’ve used both say water is as good or better and easier to use, less messy. If you want to read those posts just go to the top of this thread and type “water” into the little box that says “search this topic”. Then press enter and that will bring up only the posts in this thread having “water” in the text. Most of those are about using water to sharpen.

The stone posted above was always used with spit to my knowledge also.

the labels of the old Pike Washita's are amazing, I can't get enough of them, so cool

These are wonderful old labels and I love old sharpening stones of all kinds and use all kinds and sizes of them
and I wish more people would think of them as valuable sharpening tools. They certainly are.

Just got this at flea market for 5 bucks . Came here to find what it is . I believe it is an old Washita . It seems to be between a hard and soft. Box and stone were covered in oil , but cleaned up nice . Even dished as it is , it’s dead on flat and square across the stone . Thinkin it was used for razors or previous owner was very consistent in his use of it . Glad Scott started this thread !

That’s a beauty. Bonus points for the hinged box. This winter I’d like to make about three of those for some well used stones I have.

I think you are spot on. From the colour and dishing looks very much like a Washita. For $5 absolute find.

That is a nice stone and a very clever box. First box I've seen with a hinge and first stone I've seen that was so evenly used. If you can remove that stone from the box you may find a "new" stone on the underside.

Rdubya21, it’s possible that might have been used as a “counter hone” on the cutlery counter in a retail store, which would account for its heavy use. Somewhere toward the beginning of this thread is a picture of an Case counter hone that I obtained several years ago from an old going-out-of-business hardware store. It is sway-backed similar to yours, from years of use.

Not sure what the beat up sheath reads,b ut the hunk of metal has a groove down the middle....

Is this a sharpening device?

Scott, the leather sheath has an EZE Lap logo on it, can't make out all the other words other than "stone".
Got to be some sort of sharpener. Might be a diamond stone and the groove would be a hook sharpener.
