All About Pocket Knives

Thanks guys, and my legs are much better and fixed pretty good!
The bonus is that my smoking cigs and booze drinking are gone!!
The only problem I have is learning how to walk again, after being
in bed for two months! I'm getting around slow but sure; the worst

Bobby, I celebrated your return to health and to AAPK by buying an Old Cutler off of Steve Sanders AAPK store this morning. These are Steve's photos of a mint Old Cutler Barlow. The beauty of the red bone just knocked my eyes out; looks like you had the "pocketworn" style before Case adopted it. I should have it by the end of the week. OH

Well, well Old Hunter, look at you!! That's one of my baby's for sure! I never put my personal tang stamp on any of my barlow's because we had so many pocket blades already blanked and stamped. With 50,000 blades already made, we never had or made a second run!! I found a box of that red jigged bone up in the tool room years ago, and before it got scrapped or thrown away, I snatched it!! It was only about 100 pieces or so and lots of them were bad but I was able to salvage about 50% of them. I used to love hitting the heavy polish buffer and getting that pocket worn affect! I was doing this 30 years ago!!! So this knife is really a R.A.P. Cutler personally made by yours truely!
Don't ever sell it.....

Glad I could help. I must admit, I enjoy being here for all you guys to fill in the blanks, so to speak. How many times have you looked at a knife and wonder who, what, where, and when. Well, with most Colonial's, and all my RAP's and Heritage knives, I am the only man alive who can accurately answer those unknown questions! This is the reason I feel I am so valuable to most knife collector's. Most importantly, it's completely and absolutely my pleasure to be here for all you knife nuts!! Also, I try to be as accurate as humanly possible because we all know the importance of the details.

Hello gents, Bobby P. here, Colonial Knife Co....
This barlow has my personal modifications of Colonial's version of
our # 720, Old Cutler Barlow...That one had brown Delrin handles;
I put the red jigged bone on and changed the 720's solid brass
bolster to nickle silver one's... Believe me, I got that baby HOT when I
polished it HEAVY and gave it that "pocket worn" apperance like
a few companies are NOW selling some knives useing that slogan
"pocket worn"..!! Thing is..I was doing this on my knives 30 years
ago!!! Boy I miss making knives...

Thanks to my dear friend Scott Rauber and his knife give away program,
apparently I am the proud winner of "The Steel Sah-lute First Day Of Spring" knife give away!!
This little three inch baby made by Camillus is adorable and one of the tuffest folders I have ever seen! We are talking Carbonitride Titanium, VG10 Steel! In addition, the handle is made from G10, one of the strongest and most durable handle materials known to man!
The Tanto straight edge blade is razor sharp and I'm happy to say it's been in my right pocket since it arrived last week!

Saw this unusual Colonial on ebay last week - it was listed by the seller as an Imperial, but the pictures clearly showed it was marked Colonial. A cross between a Barlow and an Electricians knife - I thought it was a cool looking shell handled advertising knife in a unique configuration so I grabbed it. OH

Hey there OH...that Colonial Barlow/Electrician baby is rare for sure! I don't think this model was even in the line and it's very possible it's design was a special request from the ad specialty buyer! Colonial was known for making almost anything that a customer might request! Good score!!
Take note of the diffrence in tang stamps from each blade; they clearly don't match....
This was never a common practise!
They probably ordered a Barlow but requested the locking wire stripper/screw driver instead of the pen blade! Neat find...

Good call OH,it is a nice one.

Here's an old Colonial I just got in...it's got the arched tang stamp which dates it from '26-'38...nice solid handles with no cracks, shield, tip bolsters, seperate blade wells for each blade, just a really solidly constructed well made old knife, with a really classic look and feel to it.
I do love these old Colonials!

If I were you, I would hold on to this antique; it's a classic!!
It is definately a piece of history AND very rare...

Hey Bobby, big thanks to YOU and your family for making such fine pieces of cutlery. I'm proud to be a temporary custodian of it and will give it a good home while I can, then make sure it gets passed on to someone that will appreicate it. Those really old ones are something special indeed.

Bobby, as always thank you for the story of my latest Colonial knife. I knew the knife was unusual when I bought it, but I didn't pick up on the different tang stamps between the two blades. Colonial must have been a great place to invest your working life - glad you found your way here to share some of it with us! OH

My pleasure gentlemen! I am very proud to be part of such a historical company in the cutlery industry. Sometimes I can't believe I was lucky enough to be born into something I loved so much. I miss making knives so bad it hurts! This is why my book was so important to write. I hope when I'm long gone, future knife collector's will still refer to my book for information involving 100 years of knife production and family history..

If pocket knives could talk! Lord only knows who used, carried, bought, sold, and saved this baby...
From my point of view, my company made this knife over 60 years ago and it clearly has been well used and it's STILL around!! A faint but strong heartbeat!! Solid N.S. bolster's and solid pin construction; this is very old. Scott I'm thinking maybe early 40's or better, just to give you an idea, not that you of all people need help assesing a pocket knife!! Ha..
What I'm getting at is the appreciation factor that I feel knowing we made a dam good product...all depending heavily on your own point of view. Anyway I am very pround to be part of family of tradesman, like ALL of our forefathers came here to do.

Do not fear the missing bail, I have a few and will send you one or two if you need.

I had to bring these up to show you my customized version of a similar Colonial, and an Imperial which is the bottom one. This is some of my oldest pearl work. The Abalone here is over 100 years old now!
