its GEC's African Blackwood, arguably the original Ebony, before Macassar and Gabon claimed the category.

The Mpingo is slicker and smoother than the Gabon, to the touch. Almost impossible to see any difference in the photo, but the Mpingo is glossier, closer to glass. The Gabon feels dryer and tackier to the touch, and is a bit more matte in finish. Both Mpingo and Gabon are equally black and have similar pore structures. Neither of mine have the brown streaks more common in the Macassar.

Gotcha, that makes sense. I have some of the African blackwood, and one or so of the Gabon ebony & and a ton of the Macassar. I like the light streaks highlights, the darker ebony is new to me so I guess it's still growing on me. there's a lot of varieties of wood out there.

There sure are, and you have some real beauties. This time around I was hoping to avoid Acrylic stabilized woods. I think the Blackwood is natural, as well as the Ebony, but Im not positive. In my limited search, the only wood that is consistently listed as not needing stabilization is the Desert Ironwood, but opinions vary.

The Walnut on the current Charlows is stabilized in house by GEC. I chose to pass on the material, because I wanted to avoid a plasticized handle, even though the material is very beautiful and durable.
