Garry,
Congratulations, that's a real looker!
For some reason I've never acquired very many Congress Patterned knives. ::shrug::

Phil, while I have a few Congresses that pattern has never been a big draw for me either. Yet they have retained their popularity as a basic pattern for a long time.

I did a search on "congress patterned knives" on Google and it referred me back to AAPK to a thread called "Ruminations on the Congress Pattern
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=54556#p607744attern" .
Garry, does that sound familiar? :)

Phil, I remember that thread very well. Lots of interesting opinions and thoughts. I wonder if it would be practical to try something similar, maybe a series e.g. Discuss the Trapper, Discuss the Whittler, etc. Members could share why they like and use a pattern or, on the contrary, why a pattern does not appeal.

While I enjoy looking at photos of members' knives, discovering their thoughts or personal reactions to knives is enlightening and interesting to me. In other words, sharing one's experience of a pattern or even of a particular knife.

Garry, I’m glad you like that one so much. I thought it was pretty special when I bought it too. I have never been disappointed w/ H&R knives that I have owned over the years. I don’t know if that’s true of what they have coming out now, but these made in Germany have all been top notch.
I have a thing for Congress patterns, it’s one of the most collected patterns that I have. There is just something about having multiple blade choices that is satisfying and the shape of the knife appeals to me as well.

So pick a pattern, start a thread and see where it goes. Don't be shy.

As you probably know, AG Russell tried to save Bertram because he considered them the finest pocket knives in the world, equal to many customs. Not too long before his death he commented that the current Hen & Roosters while good knives were not at the level of the old Bertrams. And he certainly knew his way around a knife. All I can say is that this particular H&R of 2005 would be very pleasing to him I think.

I don't know a lot about the quality of this line of Boker knives, but
if someone wants to comment, please do.

I've anecdotally observed that, for new Bokers, the more ostentatious the box, the lower-quality the build of the knife. ::shrug::

I hope yours are the exceptions that prove the rule.

Mmmmm Blackjack. I'm a fan boy for Effingham Blackjacks. I bought a handfull sometime before the new millennium when they were available and still reasonable.

Ken, Blackjack started in CA, then went to Japan, back to the U.S. in Effingham, Il. The last I heard they are now made by Bark River which is located near Escanaba Michigan. (Google is so smart.)

Mike Stewart who, together with a young South African, Steven Lewis, formed a company called Blackjack Knives early in 1987.
Before the company moved to Effingham IL they were located in the following locations, Chatsworth , CA circa 1987, Canoga Park, CA circa 1988, and Van Nuys, CA circa 1989-1991.
In late October of 1991, Mike and his family packed up and headed to Effingham, IL."

“The Company ceased business in Effingham in the Summer of 1997.”
Quote from Mike Stewart – Founder of Blackjack Knives

Somehow they ended up in Michigan, post 1997. I think. Don't take that to the bank.
