I killed my 1st deer back in '66, been fairly successful over the last 49 years and I've only killed one piebald buck. That was back in the early 80's. He had white patches about the size of your open hand across his sides and back. If I remember right, he was a 4 point. Several deer came out in a soybean field and I had to turn around to make the shot in the tree stand, it was getting late and could still see the little antlers through the scope so I fired the old '06 and down he went. When I got to him, I couldn't see his head, it was up under some weeds and my 1st thought was I had killed a fawn . Sent the hide to be tanned with the hair on and never saw it again .
There was a big doe in our community that was all white except for her head. We had all seen her for several years then some dude killed her and was really chastised by the community. Everyone enjoyed seeing her along the road. She would think she was hidden but she stood out like a sore thumb, really surprised she lasted as long as she did.
It's amazing to see the different color tones of the deer on our place, kinda' like watchin' a herd of purebred cows, pretty soon you recognize each one and which calf belongs to which cow. Same with the does and their fawns. Some have a lot more white on the legs, once in a while one will show up with a double white throat patch. We had a melanistic fawn born on our place several years ago. You could not see any white on it, only lighter color underside, looked like black goat. It turned out to be a buck, his 2nd year he had small spikes, was legal back then. I let him walk that season but next season he didn't return.
Thinking about this is about to get me excited to be in the woods, our rifle season starts Thanksgiving Day!

Very cool dogg. Nice you are able to hunt with your son. Good times with a nice buck to cap it off.
Interesting pics of that buck and read from Phillip on the that type of deer. Never heard or read about one.

Dogg, that is a nice, thick bodied buck your son shot. I have never shot a piebald (or seen one when I was out hunting), but an old buddy shot one while hunting with me years ago just off the Tar River in Edgecombe County. There was also one in Wilson County, a young buck, that I saw in a field a couple of times off a county road a few years ago - it wasn't my land to hunt though. Those are the only two I have ever seen. I have a picture of Tom and his piebald doe that I will pull out and scan. OH

Ps. Here is the picture, only piebald I have ever seen shot - this was a decent size doe for our area - shot 18 years ago on 11-12-1997.

Beautiful buck there GD! Congrats to the shooter.I saw a spike the other day with a very distinctively white face....all around his eyes was really white, also his muzzle and his neck, very cool looking. I enjoyed watching him under my stand for about a half hour....would have made a beautiful shoulder mount if his head gear was a tad bigger.

Well, did I tell all ya'll we went fishin' Saturday for a few minutes.....

Good Lord I cooked like an egg....burnt my little noggin, sweat my butt off, and brought back memories of my dad giving us fishing instructions when we were young... I try and avoid some of the words he used to assisit us....

No fish were caught and we had limited time and poor equipment because they badgered me into taking them....Won't happen again!

Awe, don't say that Scott. Those little fellerz had a great time, I know it. I've fished many a times and got skunked and it didn't bother me a bit. You and the boys outdoors, how much better can it get??

Scott, looks like you're doin better than me. I have two grandsons that look about the same age as yours. Last time I took them fishing they used the rods as swords. My granddaughter on the other hand, has promise.....

Really it wasn't the boys it was the trouble I had to go thru to get the gear ready and I was sweating buckets....literally.

We'll use my gear next time and at least have the worms in the water longer.....

Scott - it was a mighty hot week for November in my area! Cooler today, fortunately. You did good not to teach your grandsons any new words while fishing. I recall that my dad had a few special words when he got a backlash or the wind took the boat in an unwanted direction ...

I just got home from a weekend pheasant hunt in Oklahoma. Had a great time with old buddies.

It was great watching the dogs work the fields and go on-point. Our guide had a an old retriever that walked along with him, and retrieved all the birds.

Looks to be a ""grand time"" !!!!__________Boy oh boy,do I miss my dogs & quail hunting -- but most of the farming has long been gone & not many birds left around my parts -- glad yall had a good time !!!!

Thanks guys - we had a great time. We wound up with 47 or so pheasant and 3 quail over two days hunting. I forgot how quick and small those quail are.

Modern gun season for whitetail deer opened today here in Kentucky. I was fortunate to fill my buck tag within about 30 minutes of beginning the hunt. I thought some of you folks might enjoy a few pictures from today.

After the morning hunt ended I drove to the farm across the road from where I hunt and was treated to a breakfast of sausage, country ham, sliced tomatoes, fried eggs, fried potatoes, biscuits and sausage gravy cooked on a wood burning cook stove at my friend Tony's hunting cabin.

(Now if only Jerryd will come to my rescue and get the pictures upright.)
