Centre-piece knife for the "Thirteen Colonies" Bicentennial set. 3000 total sets made for Parker in 1976. Nice popcorn-y burnt stag. Now I guess I "need" the other 6 expensive variants. Mixed blessing lol
This blade was at some point considered for the centerpiece of the set

Today's trip to the post office yielded this crop of items.
This truly is a day of Schrades. First up, another Geo Schrade, wire handle, hawkbill pruner.
Next, we have another Schrade 863. My third of this Camillus 72 variation. Last, but not least,
I don't have a (Schrade) Craftsman 9494, yet (it's another Camillus 72 variation), but I obtained
a tang stamp punch for the 9494.

Doug, sorry to hear such a report. Kinda' puts a damper on me showing off my new Schrade.
I carried one of the Schrade 881s for several years back in the late 70's and early 80's. I consider them to be a great all around work knife. Used it everyday at work as a maintenance man and probably every day at home on the farm. One afternoon in the mid 80's I killed a deer on a farm about 20 miles from our place. I had field dressed the deer and drug it to where I could load it in the truck. Some where in all this, I lost my Schrade 881. The hole in the pocket of my camo coveralls explained what happened. Fast forward one year, same property which had been logged during the summer, following a skidder trail, I found my 881 between the ruts. It was sun bleached and rusted. Cleaned it up and considered it to be retired, just a memento. The other day I spotted an 881 on ebay that looked too good to turn down. Turns out it was much better than I had expected! Here are pictures of the "new" Schrade and the old one I had lost for a year.

- If it had a box or wrapper it would be close to mint!

- If I get desperate I could call this one out of retirement.

Hi "Old Mate" Dug from Australia,

long faced doctors are very hard to face.
Keep on keeping on, you have prayers coming from all over the world, they will help.
Keep doing all the things you like, that always works, and let me know if I can help... Ken

Koldgold,
You got a nice pile of 881s!
Educate me on the different in tang stamps if you will. My old one and the "new" Schrade 881 only have SCHRADE on the tang and I realized yours are stamped SCHRADE WALDEN. Is that difference an indicator of when the knives were made?

Also noticed yours have the "match strike pull" and mine are just plain nail nicks.

Treefarmer, Schrade Walden stamped knives went from 1946 through 1972, and Schrade stamped from 1973-2004.

All above is correct, the very early knives had bone handles.
The main difference was Schrade moved to another factory, in New York State.

Thank you, fellers!

Now if I can just remember that bit of information.

I rooted through my little wad of Schrades and only 3 are
stamped Schrade Walden, most have the Old Timer shield.

The Old Timers which are stamped SCHRADE but no sign of U.S.A. are made in China for Taylor Brands or whatever the newest owner is, but definitely after the 2004 bankruptcy of Imperial Schrade.

Recently I found a nice Schrade SS8173 3 5/8" cattle knife. The blades are almost full and the functionality is good, but the front scale had fallen off. Today I got the knife back from Mr. Herman Williams with 2 new scales and a touch up on the blades. To fix defects (pits) in the blades Herman applied a PMS (Polished Mark Side) finish to the blades. I am thrilled with the work, which is no surprise given who did the work.
