Thanks gents, SD is a great place for pheasant hunting. Phil, I have my birds cleaned, vacuum packed, and frozen. They go into a Goretex cooler that can be carried on an airplane and stowed in the overhead. The cooler holds two limits, carries mine and my hunting partners, his gun case carries my shotgun. OH

OH I have to say I'm envious of your pheasant hunt. That's something I always thought I'd love to give a whirl. Congrats on harvesting some beautiful (and tasty) birds.

Great birds you have there Bruce! All game birds are beautiful in their own way but none as pretty as a cock pheasant, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.

Some additional info on that Elk in case anyone is interested...

Joe, no bears out that way. Jarbridge Wilderness Area is in the northeastern portion of the state which is really the only area we have Elk. We do have bears in NV but over on the north west side outside of Reno/Tahoe area. They just started in the last 4 or 5 years allowing hunting and the tree huggers are all up in arms over the whole thing. Personally no interest at this point in taking one unless it came after me.

Phillip, they do allow horses there but no motorized or nothing with wheels for that matter like a wagon. game sled, etc assuming the terrain would allow for dragging one around anyway. No helicopter drop offs (actually states in the regulations) or pickups.

That Elk was shot 3.8 miles into the wilderness area from camp. Took 4 shots at 500 yards into the boiler room with a 7mm Mag. All mortal shots but just did not want to go down my son said. The antler were 56" long with 7 points on either side. It scored 371 which is just shy of Boone and Crockett book entry at 380 points.
It probably weigh close to 1000 pounds undressed. They (3 guys) took 2 trips to pack the boned out meat out totaling about 400 pounds. My son's buddy is having the a cape mount done so entire head and skin was packed out and I am sure that wasn't light either and likely pretty awkward to do with 56" antlers sticking up.
The differential in meat harvested to animal undressed weight may sound like meat was left or wasted but it wasn't. You would be surprised that the antlers alone can weigh 40 pounds and I imagine the gut pile is pretty heavy also. Not to mention weight of the bones strong enough to support an animal that heavy.
Anyway, made one trip and hung the rest in trees for the night and made the 7.6 mile round trip to get the rest the next day.

One note is that if you harvest a bull Elk in NV, you are not eligible to apply or draw for a tag for 10 years so likely the reason they passed on shooting about 10 decent size bulls prior to this one. I think maybe you can get a cow tag every year, not sure.

I have 5 bonus points for Bull Elk built up for next years draw. Took 5 years to get those at one point accrued per year on either failure to draw or just buying a point at 10 dollars each year.

Hope to get a tag next year. Pretty big hunt as it is an Alaskan tent type of camp with one or 2 weeks of vacation dedicated. Last year they started a program where you can pull both a cow and bull tag in same zone and hunt at the same time. Not sure I would want to go there. Heck of a lot of work if you nail both.

May try to get some additional antler pics tomorrow before we head to the taxidermist with his and my 2 harvests from this year.

I am off on a pheasant hunt next week. We went to Kansas last year and it was great hunting. We are going to try Oklahoma this year. Maybe we will get up to South Dakota next year.

Jerry - Great wapiti! The elk itself is impressive, but that photo makes it look like a giant. I do not envy those fellows packing that trophy out.

OH - love those pheasants. I used to hunt quail, but I have never shot at a pheasant.

That is one fine elk Jerry! Bruce that looks like a kick, I haven't been pheasant hunting in 20 years.

Very much enjoying everyone's posts, pics and stories as always! Been working way to much lately so haven't been able to post much.... have off next week though to bow hunt the wiley whitetail, so hope to have some stories and picks to share soon!

Nice dogg. Never tasted squirrel but I would like to. Not many trees around these parts. Heard there are some somewhere (squirrels, not trees) but never seen one in NV.

Scott - nice little snake! Those little ground rattlers are not usually deadly, but you do not want any of those boys to be bitten. My mother was bitten by a ground rattler about 1919, and for the next eighty odd years she could not stand the sight of a snake.

Greetings AAPK, from a northern Wisconsin bowstand! Just had a fat doe and a spike come through, waiting on a shooter buck. The spike ws a beautiful deer, white muzzle and throat, and lots of white around the eyes, got to watch him for about a half hour or so, very cool.

(I tried to add a pic of me in my stand but it just keeps showing up all black....will try again...)

Hrumph. Still not working. Just have to use your imagination I guess!

Twenty minutes into today's hunt my son Zack had a nice 154lb five pt piebolt buck what beautiful markings..Has anyone on this thread ever shot a piebolt whitetail?note the white was on all four hoofs and for a grey face adult he still had white all around his eyes.

Nice little buck gd, now the work begins. Interesting markings.......

Garddogg - Fine buck that your son got. When I used to hunt as a kid I loved squirrel hunting better than any other hunting. We lived in the woods, and I would take the dogs and my .22 and be hunting within five minutes of walking out the door. I always liked the taste of squirrel too. Maybe it was because I grew up eating wild game, but I like gamy flavor.
