According to the catalogs that's exactly what the hole is for John. Nice pick up.

Paul, thank you so much, appreciate the catalog scan.

Here's one of those knives I have always wanted, but stays in the back of my mind. I came across this one for a good price. Craftsman branded schrades are very appealing to me and this one does not disappoint. :D

Nice one Paul! ::tu::
I also have a Craftsman version of the Schrade Walden 804 that I often carry when I'm working in the shop.
There such a useful pattern that it's easy to understand why they are often pretty well used when you find them.
Sometimes it just jumps in your pocket before you know!

Thanks Dale. This one seems to have been used with care. I put edges on it to my liking and it's in my pocket today. No reason to let a good tool sit around. ::tu::

I don't think they made many of these with stag. This might be only the second one i have seen. Am i correct that it is fairly rare ?

I guess owners are hanging on to them because they don't show up on ebay or knife forums.

Not recent additions, but a couple that I haven't shown before.
2OT rehandled by Herman Williams, and a Walden era 881 stockman.

Those two are very nice especially since I learned a bit about Mr. Herman Williams thanks to Doug (dweb1897) here on AAPK in the last few days!
I still have trouble keeping the mumblypegs and the Mumbleypegs from Texas separated. ::hmm::

JohnR, that is indeed a very good looking Whittler. I especially like the clean lines of the master blade. ::tu::

John, that is a very pretty whittler.

Here's a recent one, a 4" stockman variant that I haven't seen before. I also have an LB7 with the same shield. A little nicer with the wood handles than a run of the mill delrin schrade.

Nice knife! For those who don't know that pine-cone and branch motif was an attractive corporate mark for Tharpe now Tharpe-Robbins:
http://ipstore.tharperobbins.com/

They were/are an employee appreciation type of company and they placed lots of SFOs with Schrade over the years. I really like the pine-cone logo. It's on all their knives in one way or another. Delrin "Schrade Scrimshaw" Tharpe knives are more commonly seen. Look for the logo on the rear of the knife.

The knife below is the type that is seen the most often. They may or may not have engraving showing the company who ultimately bought them from Tharpe. In this case it's "HOMEBASE".

I've been trying to find out more about the shield, thank you for the info. ::tu::

Here is my LB7 with the pinecone shield. It also differs from a regular LB7 by having nickel silver bolsters and liners.

I picked this one up Memorial Day weekend at an antique store. It is a new in the box 194OT with the shield from Asten, a company that made felts for the paper industry. According to what I found for online history, this company started about 1890 in Belgium and then later started a manufacturing plant in Philadelphia about 1931.

When you Google Asten mostly what you find are knives, primarily Schrade, that have the Asten name on the shield. Apparently like a lot of other companies that produced felts for the paper industry, they also gave away a lot of knives!
One of the unique things about the Delrin on this knife is that it is much darker in color than the Delrin on most Old Timers.

Pardon the lousy indoor pictures, the shield is really quite shiny and it makes it difficult to photograph.
