The square hole is a wrench for the early acetylene headlamps.
WOW... That knife really does go on back there!

Luckydog, that knife is a beauty with tons of history.
Picked up this lightly used 294 this week, love the Schrade bone.

It is the 'details' of the older Schrade knives that make them so attractive. The 294 above is a good example: master blade has a saber grind on the front and a full flat grind on the back side. Much more 'interesting' than a full flat grind on both sides. And the top bolster is threaded, which is more attractive than plain bolsters. Very fine knife.

8583 cattle knife punch. 3 3/8 equal end cattle knife pattern. Spear with long pull, spey and punch blades. Spear master blade tang-stamped SCHRADE/WALDEN/N.Y.U.S.A. on mark side. Tang-stamped 0302 on pile side. No half stops. Faint remnants of an etch ??ADY JR. on master spear blade. All blades centered properly, with good snap and no lateral play. All blades show grey patina, some faint micropitting in places. Possible sharpening, but not evident, as there appears to be no blade loss. Brass pins and liners. Threaded rounded bolsters and long oval blank pinned shield may be steel rather than nickel silver; I am not sure. Brown peachseed jigged bone handles are perfect, with no pin cracks or other flaws, and little to no pocket wear. This knife is shown in the 1926 catalog, but not in any Schrade Walden catalogs. The presence of the βU.S.A.β in the tang stamp suggests that it was not made immediately after 1946. The β0302β tang stamp is a complete mystery.

I have had it awhile. It is available. I am starting to release knives that I never believed that I would.

That cattle knife is a great piece, and in amazing condition.
This is my latest, and (as of this post) only old Schrade. It doesn't bear Schrade's name, but they did manufacture it: the "Old Crafty" Stockman. Research has shown that this one was made before 1974, possibly only in 1973. I need to find more old Sears catalogs to confirm that. This knife has been shown elsewhere, but I thought it deserved a place in this thread, too.

Nice Old Crafty Dan!
I collect the Old Craftys because (as you can see) they are nothing more than an Old Timer with a different shield.
Same covers....
Same shield location....
Different tang stamp...../
Here is a Craftsman 9523 that even has an Old Timer shield .....
(For some reason.... I have this one marked as 1965...???)
The pattern numbers for the Old Craftys that are (4 number) pattern numbers for Sears, are from the 70's (I believe).... (Maybe... maybe not...???)
The reason I say that is because the style of the knives had changed somewhat by the time they were marking the Old Craftys with 5 numbers in the pattern number.....
Here is a 95071.... I'm not sure when it was made but the bolsters and shield are gold / copper colored.....
Maybe there needs to be an Old Crafty thread..?????.....

When the 9523 first showed up in the 1963 Sears Christmas Book it was an Old Timer. The first time they're called Old Crafty's is in the 1966 Christmas Book

That link will take you to a magical place with every Sears catalog from 1940-2011, and all of them are searchable. Put on a pot of coffee before entering - you'll be there a while. This rabbit hole runs DEEP!

Thank you, Jason. Very valuable link, that!
Meanwhile, it would be more tidy to have the Delrin/Swinden knives in the 'latest Schrades' thread instead of 'old Schrades.' Just my opinion.

Indeed, sir. The search feature takes a little getting used to but it's a quick learning curve, and when you get it figured out you can find whatever you want in seconds.

In response to the 0302, I have the same knife with JACK KNIFE BEN HANDY DANDY JR. ink etched on the face of the blade and the back side is 0302. No tang stamp on the front tang. Schrade said they never made that knife.

The 0302 is obviously a contract number. Schrade made my knife. It is microscopically correct to the Schrade pattern, the bone, the jigging, the grinds, the shield, the whole nine yards. There is zero chance that it was made by anyone else, unless you think that the work going on in the Ulster buildings was not Schrade, which of course it was. The pattern never made it into the Schrade Walden catalogs because it was not being made any more. But obviously Jack Knife Ben (or his sons) ordered up a batch from the pattern out of the old Schrade CutCo catalog. I have shown the catalog cut.

It has been a lot of fun trying to see how many of my Jack knife Benβs were made by Schrade. Have you seen my collection?

I believe some has been posted but it would be great to see them again!
By the way, there has been a JKB on Ebay lately that does not resemble anything that Schrade ever made. I don't recognize the maker at all.

Fake just like a lot of Jack knife Ben knives. Tom Maxim in Cristian Tn. use to sell some swearing they were originals. My favorites are the Napanoch, Winchester, and Schrade made for Jack knife Ben before 1935 when Ben sold out to the sons.
