These are actual BSA and GS automatic knives that could be ordered in the Scout accessory equipment catalog back in the 40s.... the larger still has faint BSA logo etched on the blade the Girlscout doubles etch is long gone . Rare to see both together in any condition . Happy New Year Folks !!

I'm of the understanding that the BSA Scoutmaster had to write through his Council to National who would then issue the knife on an as needed basis (i.e. hand or arm handicap). I've also been told that the Girl Scout model was Nationally marketed as a solution to broken finger nails but I have yet to see any advertisments supporting that.

Do you have any knowledge about the origins of your knives?

The Double ender schrade knives were all marketed as "no more broken nails" at one time or another . as far as the "permission" from a scoutmaster to obtain an auto due to a handicap is still a debate as anyone could buy an automatic back then ...they were legal . what separates and distinguishes the GS knife is the jigging pattern , etch and bail . all are unique to just the GS version doubles. The larger knife has the etch still on it . I have been able to see paper on the GS but cannot find any on the BSA knife . if any of you out there have seen or have a picture of the add from the handbook or other print ,,,, please post it .

Rich Langston, (lt632ret) would know about those Scout switchblades.
If anyone has papers on them or knows where some are it is propably Rich.

Did Ulster during the Dwight Devine era (1923-1941) ever have a round shield with a red background? I'm only aware that the company used an "interstate" style shield.

Thoughts?

I've never seen one like it but that alone does not mean it's not legit. There's lots of things I've yet to see.

Ulster USA made a scout knife with similar looking smooth white synthetic handles and a round BSA shield inlaid in the handle. It would be much newer production that the Dwight Devine era. The canopener blade was different that the one on the knife shown.

Edit: It just occurred to me that I think I recall a similar knife to the one now in question that someone posted here on the forums questioning its authenticity. As I recall, MillerBros seemed to be of the opinion that it was legit. If I can locate that thread I'll post a link to it here.

My Grandfathers Case 1919-1940 Scout that I only got because it was in a drawer in the garage when the other relatives went through the house like a swarm of locusts!

I was going to go until I went back to this old link. I was negative then but now I have to say it's looking legit. The shield is a match and the knives are at different stages of wear so now we have 2 examples. Maybe it was a SFO back then? I'd still hold my $ unless I could get my hands on it to look it over. There are allot of BSA knife people that should know.

Thanks for the postings guys, I'm still perplexed but not to the point of shaking a tree to find $800 (I'm saving my pennies for the Shenandoah show in April). Here's my thinking (and support of others current thinking):

- the shield is most certainly different. The shield on the knife in the current eBay auction has "B S" at the top of the shield and what I think looks like "OK AM" at the bottom of the shield. The shield on the knife previously discussed on AAPK clearly says "boy Scouts of America".

- the main blade tang stamp knife in the current eBay auction is (a) not 100% visible to see the Dwight Divine & Sons stamping and (b) different than the one previously discussed on AAPK (thanks Phil) in that it says Ulster

- the screwdriver/cap lifter tang stamp knife in the current eBay auction is also different than the one previously discussed on AAPK (thanks Phil) in that it too says Ulster.

I'm guessing that the production numbers on a pre-war pearl handled Scout knife are pretty low and the variances from #1 to #x are minimal if any at all. I find the differences in shields and tang stamps to be a significant difference to potentially one of them being an imposter, am I all wet? If not, which one do you this is correct?

"Dear tracker42,Do you have any information about the round red shield? I always thought that the Ulster Dwight Devine era knives (1927-1941) all had interstate style shields. None of my catalogs, books or manufacturing records indicate the manufacturing of this beautiful specimen. Do you have any data? Thanks in advance, Tom"

Hmmmmmm

I one knife has a extra pin the handles.
One knife has the etch still on the blade and shield worn .The second has a perfect shield but blades worn.????
THEY HAVE DIFFERENT SCOUT SHIELDS

Speaking for myself, I was not laughing at you or your post, rather the fact that the fleabay seller referred you back to this very forum where this was being discussed

If you look at that sellers stuff he/she does not sell knives on a regular basis, so they must have found this knife went to Google and entered "Ulster Boy scout knife" and wound up here looking at the old thread.

After they seen the first one sell for $1200 they priced theirs at $800 hoping it would be a quick sell.

Don`t feel bad, I wrote about a rare knife and posted it here a couple years ago and a few months later a fleabay seller copied and pasted my entire write up on the knife as their description of the same knife they were selling!
