All About Pocket Knives

Very nice everybody.

Does the big five inch EO have a pattern number on it? I don't see one.

These usually have two blades, that big spear and a long, beefy pen.

There was one on Ebay recently with only one blade. That makes two I've seen, but a pattern number might suggest the original presence of two blades.

WOW!! Those are some really nice old Robeson knives!! I've only got the three (so far). The Daddy Barlow pictured above, a 642214 camper/scout, and a
823850 mini jack and I like them all.

I never knew that pattern even existed until the recently deceased Joe Seale published an article about one he had obtained in KnifeWorld Magazine.

That one was just about mint; certainly unused.

I forget what he theorized as its purpose, but it wasn't as a display knife. Joe put it somewhere in the "Trades" as a utilitarian tool.

I'd love to have a nice Terrier in that pattern.

I've seen these knives advertised at $2500.00 before, so my getting one remains a rather remote possibility.

I'd have to trade some nice Robesons.

Charlie isn't that knife missing a pen blade?I have had both a Terrier and a Robeson in the past,and have seen a few others all of which were 2 bladed.

I raised that question in a previous post.

I have seen one other one blade version, but whether either are correct is a question to which I do not know the answer.

Without a pattern number, it's difficult to know. No reason that Robeson wouldn't have made it as a single blade jack, they did such things with other patterns.

Charlie was the pattern # on the pen blade on the 2 blade? I don`t remember on the one`s I had,but they did have #`s.Most easy opens are 2 blade knives.

I've never actually had one of these in my hands and I cannot recall any of the photos I've seen well enough to say the master or the pen had the pattern number.

I can say that I've seen pattern numbers on secondary blades on Robeson made Terrier knives, but that was due to the common presence of the dog head logo on the blades.

Here is a Robeson Pocket Eze small single spring two blade (spear and punch) soft Gunstock folder. A nice fellow on another forum new my love of Pocket Eze folders and gifted this example to me It is 3 & 1/4 inches closed and has the gorgeous Robeson worm groove jigged bone handles. Has a very small crack starting at the rear pile side pin running to the bolster. It is pattern no. 622596. The mark side spear blade tang is marked Robeson/Suredge (script)/U.S.A.

What a nice gift!
That is a little gem there. A single spring gunstock 3 1/4" with a punch; that's pretty neat. Leave it to Robeson.

Interestingly, Robeson manufactured a four inch serpentine stockman with a Turkish clip master blade and its handle-die shape number was 596, the same as your knife.

I suspect your knife is the older of the two patterns. They retired it and just reassigned the number to a new pattern.

Is there a patent date on the punch?

Charlie their is no date on the back of the punch but there are some letters and numbers some pretty indiscernible for sure.
From what I can see there is a row of large cap letters right at the base of the punch at the bolster A.T. AP can't make out the last letter. Then numbers underneath the letters 25-0 then a final letter or number that I can't make out. Any of these letter/numbers make any sense? Thanks!

Don't have one in hand at the moment and I don't have a photo, either.

I think it reads: PAT. APR 25, 05, which I interpret as "Patented April 25, 1905".

Of course, they were allowed to use that blade with its patent information a number of years before the patent finally expired.

Such a blade on a Robeson knife without that date logo was most likely made after the patent expired.

I recently picked up this little Robeson Shuredge jack at the flea market for a deuce. It is 2 5/8" with celluloid handles?? Pattern 823850 stamped on back of the pen blade. I think it is kind of neat!

Here is a four blade Pocket Eze pen knife I recently acquired. Pattern no. 642416. It has two small pen blades, larger pen blade and one nail file blade. It is pictured in David Clark's reproduction of the Robeson Cutlery Company's salesman catalog from aroun 1908--1930 on page 2 left column third folder down.

Robeson made the pattern with two blades, as well.

I'm not sure what the 85 suffix denotes on that second knife. The only difference I see is that nail relief notch and the placement of the shield. I doubt they changed a pattern number for shield placement.

Beautiful knives Lloyd and Charlie. Amazing robeson's. Vintage robeson knives to me beats all other brands by a country mile! Such a pleasure to see!

Here are 2 just arrived Robeson pocket knives;
Sleeveboard Jack, 3 5/8" 622894 (or 694 ?)
i did not realize this knife had been buffed as pictures were of low resolution. I bought it because i really like a spear point blade with a full saber grind, aka "Stabber Jack".
The other is a 3 5/8" Senator Pen or Double End Jack, # 622422. The master blade looks full but in the closed position the blade tip is about 5-7 mm shorter than it could be. Is the blade short ?
