Lots of Buck activity in this thread recently;

Welder Bob - big and blocky bolsters are correct - that was the finished configuration at the time.

Tim - right place, right time - you did WELL - nice 500!

Jerry - you are going to love that knife - I like mine for woods carry when I need a heavy blade, but the weight is great.

My latest, a two dot 112, full and tight, but well carried by a former owner. OH

Thanks fellas ::handshake::

Was the Buck 500 marked with a date code after 1986?

Is my knife a 1973-1986?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Tim, The Buck 500 "Duke" was introduced in 1978; it featured 440C blade steel, Burgundy Micarta handles, the BUCK tang stamp in Olde English block letters, and was 4-1/4" OAL in closed length. In 1981 Buck began using impregnated birch in lieu of Micarta for the handle inlays, in 1982 they switched the 500 series to 425 Modified stainless steel. During 1984-85 time period the BUCK name on the tang stamp was changed to standard block letters. Your knife was made sometime during or after 1981, but before 1984/85 and could have blade steel of 440C or 425 Modified. It is a very nice knife and is quite collectible. OH

They were a little sneakier with that 422. On the back of the sheath is a tag that says...
Buck 422 -- Top Tag.JPG

But wait for it... There's a tag beneath that tag that says, TA DA...
Buck 422 - Bottom Tag.JPG

Of course the knife is stamped and the box says...
Box Label.JPG

I my eyes, the only deceit is hiding the country of origin tag beneath another tag. Maybe I'm being too critical. They probably did it as a labor saving device, sewing on two tags with one pass of the machine. ::shrug::

I've noticed too that while the knives are made in the USA (with a few exceptions that are appropriately marked), all the current leather sheaths come from Mexico and the nylon ones come from China. OH

Already posted in the Mail Call thread, but the latest is a Buck 292 Impulse. Why? Because, among other things, it's orange.

dogg -- The funny thing is, it's name is Impulse and it was an impluse purchase. Does that make it fall under the definition of irony? I can't seem to nail down the usage of that term, no matter how many times it's explained to me. ::facepalm::

I just bought a 314 trapper 1994 model! I haven't received it yet but I have a 311 I love and I hope this knife will be as good of quality as the 311?

Dogg, nice 501 - quite unique with the anvil stamp (you've just made me aware that I don't have a single Buck with the anvil stamp).

Sidog, the 314 is a stout knife - if you like your 311 I do believe you will like your new 314. Post some pictures here when you get it.
