Carrmillus - you do realize that just because something is non fiction that does not necessarily mean it is true!

I tend to read fiction, mostly old favorites that I have read long ago and many times, like Three Men In a Boat, or science fiction by good writers, like Simak (dead), Weber, Ringo or Drake (alive). I wish I could name a new author that I really liked.

And poetry. Boethius had his Consolation of Philosophy: I have the consolation of poetry. Fitzgerald, Wordsworth, Keats, Yeats, Arnold. The men who took on the eternal questions that never change.

Since it is spring, I've been going through my gardening books (keeps me from going crazy waiting to get stuff in the ground). I've got a "keep" pile and a "discard" pile, and if a book isn't one I actively want to keep, out it goes. If the weather keeps up, by the time I ca plant I should have some significant shelf space cleared.

Currently reading The Rodale Book of Composting, mining for ideas for compost components. The soil here is mediocre at best, pH hovers around 7.5, and worst of all it is just not what I grew up with! After 19 years of gardening in the same area, it has all been double-dug multiple times; now I'm putting in some raised beds incorporating some aspects of hugelkulture for drought resistance.

Two weeks til my main planting date, so I better get to work. Right now though, I have to mow!

This is a great read, and it's all true.

I sometimes read old stuff like that book. Several of Rathborne's books are available free on line, if you read on your computer or Kindle. Here is a link to a page that lists available books. The ones from Gutenberg are easily downloaded and read: Some other sites are not so friendly.

I have recently taken up fishing. Does anyone have any good fishing books to suggest?Either fiction or nonfiction: I am looking for a good read, not how to do it books. On the other hand, any how to do it book about inshore fishing in the north Gulf of Mexico would also be welcome!

Just getting started on "With The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge. He was an enlisted Marine grunt who fought in the Pacific Campaign during WWII....very good so far.

Joe - I personally am mostly interested in inshore saltwater fishing, speckled trout, red drum, white trout, flounder. But as far as books go - it is the quality of the writing and the interest that it holds. I just wondered if anyone had any special favorites.

Any thing by John Gierach is entertaining but he writes primarily about fly fishing. Informative and humorous.
Most of my books are old collectables, but I really enjoy going through them. Haven't read them all.
Fishing books ............. you'll find no shortage of them.
May I add: learn to tie knots well.

Now, I don't read......I write.
My friend finished his book and he gave me a copy. I said I'd read it.....6 weeks later I forced myself to begin reading his book (nice friend, huh ) And, get this.....he told me one of the character's carries my last name.....

It is absolutely rivoting and gripping!! I am half way through his book and I keep texting him, saying how awesome it is.

I just finished "One Bullet Away" the making of a Marine officer by Nathaniel Fick. Captain Fick takes us through OCS (Officer's Candidate School), 9/11, a tour in Afghanistan, the invasion of Iraq and the race to and taking of Bagdad. The book is very well written. (Sent to me by 313 Mike. Thanks Mike)

Right now I'm reading "With The Old Breed" at Peleliu and Okinawa by E.B. "Sledgehammer" Sledge. It has the reputation of being one of the best nonfiction books written about Marines during WWII and so far it's living up to it's accolades.
