Yes The C.C. SFO is more narrow, spring to top of liners. I often like a slim knife but i do not have either of these to see how they feel.

New Old Timer I got in the mail yesterday. Think I might do a little whittling with some of you guys. I'm sure it will take some time for me to whittle anything other than a toothpick. Please pardon my photography skills or the lack of.

Here are a couple new ones that have come in recently.
A Buck 903 Bowie from 1994 honoring a Century of Service 1894-1994 of the California Sheriff's Association
and an Aurum etched Alamo Bowie Track Knife from the Republic of Texas Collection. Only about 80 of these were made and were issued in November of 1976. Track Knives were made in Whitefish Montana, the art work was done by Ron Adair who also did artwork for the U.S. Postal Department. The last pic is of Sam Shortes, the owner of Aurum Etching presenting the same model to former President Ronald Regan. My knife is a one off in that the handle is about 1" longer than the regular issue. The scales are Rosewood and the overall length of the Bowie is 14-3/4" .
Another Aurum Etched Track Knife made for the NRA

Do Lion Steel knives arrive with shaving sharp edges ?
Has anyone used one enough to say how well they edge hold ?
thanks, kj

I can only answer the first question but yes, both blades on my Best Man will shave arm hair. I've owned a couple of the Barlows too and I still have an Otnat. Those all came shaving sharp as well.
If I decide to carry the Best Man for any length of time I'll put my own edges on it just for the satisfaction of doing so.

Thanks Rick. If you do use one of these knives for a 'bunch of cutting', please report back on edge holding, whether their edge or yours.

FRJ wrote:I got this large knife today. Is this a paratroopers knife??
It's a good big knife.
Shown with a Colonial knife of same pattern/style.
When I bought the Colonial I didn't know enough to look for the tip of the saw. They are apparently known to snap off there.
Of the two knives, I think the Colonial is superior.
The Colonial is 6 inches long closed. The Western is 1/8" shorter.
Each knife has half stops on both blades.
These are NOT paratrooper knives. They are Navy Pilot/Aircrew survival knives that were part of the C1 Survival vests. The Colonials came in bailed and bailless models. A secondary supplier of them was United Machine Tools inc, out of Grand Rapids MI. I have only seen bailless versions with United's stamp. Everyone calls them "Pilot" knives, but every Navy air crewman who wore a C1 vest carried one.
United sold their left overs after the war into the 1950s. Some of these were chromed.
The Western is a 1968 or later copy. Date depends on the stamps. The model # was 932. They called the knife the RANGER. Came with a leather sheath or came in a plastic box (932K) with a sheath, sharpening stone and a tube of lubricant. Later the kit was eliminated. It was advertised as "Nothing else like it on the market." Probably because neither Colonial nor United Machine Tools inc, out of Grand Rapids MI, who sold them into the 1950s, were still making them.
It is possible that Western started making them before 1968, maybe as early as 1965, when they killed off several of their models. 1968 is the earliest they show up in catalogs. Still being offered in the 1982 catalog. Not in the 1986 catalog - the first Coleman-Western year.

Thanks zz, very interesting information. I'll know to call it a "pilots knife" now.
I think they are both pretty neat.

Got my new ROBI KLAAS in the mail today. It has a nice F&F, no gaps around the springs and nice bones. And at 3 3/8 inches, it's the perfect size that I like. Fits just right in a watch pocket.

As far as I know, this is US army pilot survival knife. Model of World War II and as I understand it is produced by the end of the 50s.
I like army pocket knives. They combine simplicity, functionality and strength. I especially like the models designed for paratroopers, pilots and sailors. I have several models of German, English, Russian, Italian and Greek, but I did not have from the US Army.
