Congratulations Jerry! Some nice shooting there, rewarded with a couple of trophies and some good eating too. Antelope back strap is without equal IMHO. Down here in Texas we're getting ready for a totally different season and some of the most challenging shooting found anywhere - doves. Looking like the wet spring and summer is gonna bring a good dove season with it. Lots of sunflowers and milo. Birds are plentiful and in good shape. Season opens Sept. 1!

Your Dads' rifle, what is it, I see it in the back ground? Bipod and a big long 'scope, reach out and touch one . We just don't have the opportunity to shoot what I call long distances here in our little corner of the world. Now and then you hear about somebody shootin' Bambi across a 40 acre field or way down a power line. Y'all are in another world compared to Florida Panhandle, it's all good though, God's creation!

Thanks Gents, TF, Joe and Mike! As I eluded to, feel very blessed today.

TF, it is a Savage 110E in .30-06. 4 X 12 Vortex Scope I added and retired Dad's old one. Great scope for the money and warranty (lifetime transferable, any reason). Turrets on Dad's were a bit flaky and just did not trust it. Bipod I added out of necessity as he never hunted where he needed one based on range.

Only 6 weeks till my deer tag opens. Odd season starts on a Wednesday and ends 2 weeks later on a Tuesday. Son has same zone for next couple of weeks with archery. Will have to join him to scout mine. The area is not known for huge bucks but with all the rain this year, they are truly monsters in that zone. Runs down the highway about 70 miles but starts pretty much out my back door in those mountains. I will have to get more pics but, here is a "smaller of the small bucks" as my son put it that he is passing up. He has many more pics I need to get ahold of.

Thanks again Ken. Antelope is second to none as far as taste in my opinion also and nice advantage of a smaller buck is even better taste.

I agree my friend on the challenge of dove hunting. Way I see it is if you can hit doves consistently, most other birds seem relatively easy in comparison. Starts September 1st here also with Chuckar and Duck, etc following in early October. Exciting time of year for all of us to say the least!

I'm getting geared up for dove season too. I need to start reloading some shells, 20 gauge, 1 oz 7 1/2 shot in a Remington hull with a Remington or Winchester wad all over longshot powder. Mmmm, makes a mighty fine dove and quail load. Substitute the 7 1/2 for 5 or 6 shot and it's an awful good rabbit load too.

Boy oh boy, Jerry! If that's the smaller of the small, what kind of a spread does a big one have? How much do the Mule deer usually weigh? It's a long time till openin' day around here .

I had Antelope sausage one time. It was dryer than a popcorn fart.

Are dove harder to hit than quail??

Jerry, a dove will make you think shootin' a quail is as easy as hittin' a pickup truck. They can probably fly better than 50 mph and that ain't in a straight line all the time. They zig and zag and make a lot of folks look silly. Practice at the real thing, picking your shots and it gets easier. Great eating, dark meat, always a big get together at different farms and family shoots. Many expensive citations have been written for shooting over a baited field, it's a federal offence!

Dove opens on Saturday, September 5th - Dad and I go each year and meet up with some of my other hunting buddies at one or the other of several Edgecombe County Clubs. Here are a few pictures of past years hunts - looking forward to the fun, fellowship, hunting, AND the pig picking after the hunt. Here's hoping you gents have a great season - I love dove because it is the ceremonial opening of the fall seasons (for all game). OH

Ps Dad doesn't like the fact that I am four or five inches taller than he is - always tells me to crouch!

Jerry, they sure are for me! Based on the number of shots per bird hit, I'd guess about 3 times harder to hit. Been a while since we've had any quail around here though, so haven't shot (or eaten) any in several years.

I'm no good with a shotgun. If it's moving, it's as safe from me as a babe in it's mothers arms. I shot skeet for a few years and never did get a possible on a round.

Now if I have a rifle or a pistol and it's sitting still, that's a different story.

Colonel, I'm (was) 6'2" (got it from my mother's side) and my dad was 5'6" and had a bit of a short person's attitude. Nothing was ever said but I think it was an issue with him.

And yes Cuz, they're called little gray rockets for a reason. They fly as fast as TF says, they dart, zig zag, and I've literally seen them pause and flutter at a shot then keep flying. But man they are fun.

I got a limit twice last year, first time I ever got a limit too. My friends in Texas talk about how close they come in. But here 30 yards is close on opening day. After that 40 is good. I use a 1953 Ithaca 37 20 gauge with a tight modified choke.

Dove hunting is the most fun you can have while being made a fool of, lol.

Jerry, Dad does it in jest - in fact most of what he does is fooling around - but it wasn't always that way! Thanks Dogg, Colonel - dove is the only hunting my Dad does anymore - I'm glad he makes his one trip out per year with me. Wade - I think you have produced a timeless zinger with this statement below! OH
