I went fishing with my oldest son and his wife a week ago Saturday. We went fishing in the Yamhill River where we used to fish a lot when my boys were young.

Danielle (my daughter in law) caught the first fish and the biggest, which was also the first bass she ever caught. We got soaked in the only rain worth mentioning in the last 2 months and it all came down in about 1/2 an hour. We were soaked to the bone and of course the fish decided they didn't want to bite much after that. We did see several Blue Herons and one beaver who didn't seem to mind us too much until we got too close.

Headed to the park today for a SOLO mission......boy was it swampy with all the rain we've had the last 2 weeks....

I found a fatwood stump and pulled out a couple pieces. Then tried to start a little fire in the grill.... guess what? Fatwood needs to be dried out some first.....

I will tell you, the Kershaw Roughneck was razor blade sharp and I made the shavings effortlessly!!

Scott - That must not have been old pine fatwood. In my experience the sap or resin in the old pine is pretty volatile! Glad to see that you got the fire going anyway

I pride myself on my fire making skill. I like to use all natural twigs and shavings and just one match. But there are times when I have to resort to crumpled paper and enough matches to be the fire, not just start the fire.

Great stuff as always Dale and Scott! ....Here's a pic of my daughter Sofia taken just tonight, fishing in a light rain off the pier, not bad for an 8 year old! She was a little nervous about doing the lip hold, but did it anyway.. She has got the fishing bug bad...caught another three bass just like this one too. Can't get enough.

Mike, did y'all eat them fine lookin' bass that Sophia caught? There is nothin' finer than the 2 filets (minus the ribs) from a bass about that size! We always keep the backbones and fry them along with the filets. A little salt and pepper and shake them babies around in a brown paper sack with a little flour and corn meal, a quick trip to the peanut oil and you have the makin's of a great meal. For this to be successful you must first own and know how to use a "well trained" filet knife. Mine is an old Russell 2333-9 that I had close to 45 years. I'd hate to face all the bass that this ol' knife has worked on at one time. It also does a great job on silver skin when Bambi is being processed .
