I would agree the first bone 8OT may be the rarest/hardest to find, but I don't think the blue bone stockman technically is a 8OT. It was a 100th An limited edition stockman. Of which I have an unfinished example of it.
Now there was a red bone 8OT made in latter years (probably in the mid to late 90s?). Its model was 8OT-RB. It may be the second hardest one to find. Here is an example I have.

For 1990, that might be the correct box. He also had a 8OT, NY USA stamp but no match strike pull go for a whopping $125! That's what ya'd expect a Walden to pull in. Those knives are somewhat plentiful.

Although the Blue Rope-cut Bone ACB8 [with shield and etch] is technically not an 8OT, it is very hard to find.
Your 8OT-RB that came from Schrade without a shield, and came Grooved Bolsters was made in 1985.
IMO, the 8OT Red Bone with the special shield, that was also sold in 1985 in a 3 knife set, was the best 8OT ever made.
The first [1961] 8OT with the Saw Cut Bone, is the hard one to find.

Aside from the original bone 8ot there was a version they made that was the same but with strange shrinky dink handles and I think a black synthetic sawcut (maybe delrin) walden 8ot that is pretty scarce. The red bone 1985 8ot’s are scarce and don’t show up often despite not being particularly old.

I had one of those shrinky dinks which is now sold; very unusual. The 1985s were, as mentioned, sold as a plain jane item and as the fancy collector's version. Interesting that the ones without shields were the ones with threaded bolsters.

Shrinky Dinks. My son and I created this one in 1978 or 1979. It hangs from my truck mirror. Brings up some very sad emotional thoughts about tragedy in our family.

Wasn't it called 'Bonite'? They used something in between bone and Delrin that was some kind of synthetic. could have sworn it was called Bonite.

This is the 8OT mentioned above by Cal, with the Black Saw-cut scales, made in the early 1960's.
The black 8OT is IMO is the hardest to find 8OT.
The Schrade made "1966 Buck 301" is another hard to find knife to find.
The early Schrade made Buck 301 knives [all three models from 1966-68?] are about, from time to time.

All these beautiful 8OTs / 4" stockmans getting posted here are making me happy - and a little jealous. I've been hunting for that black 8OT for too long! But I've never seen one for sale. This is my favorite pattern to collect and the bone handled ones are the most special. Here are mine, and some of them are quite new to me (in keeping with the spirit of the thread!)

I have all of the Buck 301s, made by Schrade from 1966 to 68 or 69 whem Camilus started to make them
That 1961 orange bone 8OT is in that time frame, I had one the same.
What can you tell me about your "Bonite" 8OT.
Is your ACB8 a salesman / sample knife, with "SS number" ? Not many of them were etched / with the shield.
I have only ever seen one finished set of the ACB set.
I have a full set of the woodern handled "Anniversiry" knives. There is an 8OT in that set.

The history I have on the Bonite knife comes from the seller (Hi Cal) and from talking to Michael Little about it. Michael put a name on the handle material for me. What I have learned about the knife is that it was made during that short period of time when Schrade was transitioning away from natural materials but hadn't yet received the first shipment of Delrin. Various plastics were being tried out but none, including this Bonite knife, made it to production. If you dig around you'll find some older threads where this knife and a handful of others like it have surfaced over the years. Under a magnifying glass the plastic is heavily embedded with gold and copper flake. It's really nice looking. An odd coincidence I realized after buying the knife was that I already had an Old Timer in Bonite but I didn't know what it was. I have a Primble 934 (58OT) that's also handled in Bonite. Have a look: I have the Schrade 301's too My interest in the 4" stockmans also extends to the contract knives and I've been putting together a little pile of Bucks, Primbles, Shapleighs and what not. Here are the Bucks (which I believe didn't have production shuffled over to Camilus until 1971): That ACB80 is my pride and joy. I really haven't seen too many finished ones and I was lucky to get it. It doesn't have a serial number. I don't know if any of them did? I was also fortunate enough to snag a completed ACB296. The 296 also has no serial number but the bolster has 'SSTF' engraved on it. What does it mean - I have no clue. Maybe (probably) the 'SS' is for salesaman sample and maybe the 'TF' was the salesman? I don't know, but it's a pretty knife! ** That 8OT in your post is amazing. I don't think I've ever seen that kind of definition on a saw cut bone handle. The one I have still has definition on the pile side but the front is worn completely smooth.

ACB Rope-cut bone knives:
Back in 2006 I found a seller on ebay selling Schrade knives, I believe from the Schrade Close Down Auction.
I managed to talk him to sell 5 un-finished ACB8s to me, for US$25 each.
Years later I found another ACB8 and an ACB72, both un-finished.
My salesman's ACB8, is engraved "SS45"

I January 2003 a Display unit was sent to a hardware shop, in Salem.
I bought the Display with all of its' stock, two of the 8OTs came with the Anniversary Shield [same as the 34OT].

The BADGER below is the rarest Schrade I have, in my collection.
I have only ever seen one, this one.

I finally added this 8OTY Frontiersman to my yellow Schrade pile. Only cataloged one year in 1990. The ebay seller took my discounted offer and has 2 more for sale if anyone is interested.

Do you know dates for the "Sharp Idea" boxes ?

So unless we have the box to go with it for provenance, we basically just have a spare parts knife.

Sundog picked up this Schrade 108OT in a lot of knives recently. It is the "Compliments of Schrade Cutlery 1985" etched 108 OT, new in the box. Has the rope edged Old Timer shield. What were the circumstances of obtaining one of these etched like this? They evidently didn't sell them if they are etched "Complimentary" ?? Were they for Schrade dealers to give away??

I think Ken from Australia knows the scoop on these; he should be around sometime soon. You could pm him, also.

Ken, thanks for the picture of boxes & dates. It is an important 'document' for all who collect Schrade USA knives.

Think I can now check an early maybe 1st year 4pin LB7/LB8 off my to-get list. Got this 1978 set from Herman. It was given to him by Schrade to use as a display set for knife shows. This is a double points score for me, to have that kind of provenance to go with it.
Herman said he was 'digging around' in his safe and found this set. In my humble little mind, I get visions of a bank vault filled with treasures!

A 1984 Schrade 34 OT SS knife, is for sale on eBay. Any comment or information on these un-finished knives.
The seller lists, the "handle is made of wood". The un-finished handles are "red bone".
At the listed price of $188.99 , the seller must think he has some thing very special.


I also have an un-finished 34 OT SS, that I payed $12 for, about 4 years ago.
My knife is in "mint un-finished condition", and one handle and side is finished. [not like the rusty "near mint condition" knife shown.]
About 2 years ago a seller on eBay, had some of these un-finished 34 OT SS, and was asking $35 each for them.

The listing states:
SCHRADE WALDEN 34 OT S.S. "Silver Anniversary" UNFINISHED KNIFE (!)

A beautiful, extremely rare vintage SCHRADE WALDEN 340T S.S. "Silver Anniversary" Stockman in excellent to near mint, unused, unsharpened condition and perfect working order! The bolsters are made of Sterling Silver. This knife is "unfinished" which means there is no Anniversary blade etching, no shield and the handles are not polished. A fellow collector told me that very few of these came directly from the Schrade factory, probably unfinished prototypes. The handles are free of cracks, chips and/or dings. The blades have their factory edges and strong snap. The whole knife has a slight, wonderful patina. It has never been cleaned or even polished. This outstandingly rare beauty is an authentic, fantastic collectors piece and difficult to find in this almost perfect condition. Please refer to our detailed photos. You won't be disappointed!
