All About Pocket Knives

I came across this 77 Barlow at a good price and had to have it.

I never really imagined I'd own one of these knives, but a fellow collector offered it up to me and I couldn't say no.

That's a fancy knife for sure ! Lot of detail to observe and find.
Were knives like this tempered the same as a user knife ? Or left softer to aid with etching ? Could you sharpen it up and use it with good results ?

Herman has filed most of my Aurum Etched Bowies and says they are hard as heck, so I guess you could put them to use. Some of them are factory sharp and some have not been sharpened. From what I understand,. when they were sold at knife shows, Schrade paid someone there to put an edge on them if that was what the customer wanted. As all of them were SFO's , it could have been a decision of the buyer as well. I have a couple plain ...wood handles, no etching...Schrade Bowies and I don't believe there is any difference between the steel in them and the one I just posted.

D, thank you for this info on the etched blades. I have asked before if etched blades were also tempered, same as regular run, and this is the first time to get some info.
I had a big Schrade 'Clasp" knife with stag handles and etch, "Trail of Tears" ? i think it was. I bought it used for little money because the edge was damaged. I tried to sharpen it. The steel came off fast and i could not get a good edge on it. I concluded it had not been tempered to the same hardness.

These arrived today....can't make out the one with the scratch thru the name...it's not because it's a second, I just don't remember the brand...

Monday's mail call brought me a couple knives. I really like the primble and I love how those handles look, plus it seems to be a very well built knife. There is no wobble what so ever and it locks up nice and tight, has good weight and just pops and snaps like a good knife should. The case on the other hand, is not as sturdy as the primble. It has good snap and functions properly, but seems more along the lines of a Sunday knife. I bought it because it was a little knife that I haven't seen before, and I hope is a legit case knife. It doesn't look to have been tampered with and has a neat configuration with the scissors. If anyone has anything to add, please feel free to do so. I would like to know more about the case knife, thanks ~Jon

KJ.....Aurum Etching was a chemical process. It could be that had an affect on the blade hardness. Some time back I bought one of the stag handled 275 Clasp knives with a busted blade. Herman had an un-etched blade from the bankruptcy that he put in it for me. I haven't used the knife, but I can tell you that Herman put one heck of an edge on it.

Thanks Steve.. I must say that the more I'm exposed to the old Schrade and Schrade-based knives, the more I want to buy them..and I will buy them until I run out of my knife-buying money ..and possibly bill money and food money and any other money in my pocket I figure buying knives is like catching std's from swimsuit models : there beautiful to look at, great to handle and polish, but the aftermath can be devastating.. ...and still I will do it over and over again. ~jp

Long sad story on this one. Not what I thought I was ordering (for the second time) but since I didn't have one, I guess I'll keep it.

Got two today. A GEC 46 Whaler and from Mike a S&M Gunstock Jack in stag. This stag on this S&M is perhaps the best looking stag I have ever seen. Very evenly matched stag on front and back.

More great news, got 5 knives in the mail today. Chompin' on the bit for these, Imperial USA and Ireland. Sellers photos of course. They look even better in the flesh.
The gold keychain is an 1 of 20 12k gold filled keychain penknife. It was made for E.C. Simmons Department store. I don't know the date. Seller didn't include that small piece of info when he listed it. Hence $20.00
The red stockman is Imperial Ireland red celluloid. It was never carried. Just a bit of shrinkage in one spot on the back scale other wise she walk's un talks beautifully for her age.
The lobster looks to be carried a little and sharpened maybe once max twice. Otherwise walks and talks excellent.
Same story for the sodbuster and slim stockman. Both carried lightly sharpened same.
Really good haul this time.

Several days worth here. A Queen Canoe off BF, an Ivory Bulldog off ebay (some are still there, you have to discover them), and a schrade ring turn knife from Sweetwater Knives, thanks Ray.

Scott I believe that’s a Voos with the typical arrow threw the word .

A new light weight Buck 110 and a RR bone stag pen trapper. I'm really liking the pen trapper but the 110 not so much.
I have the 112 version in this series and it's a much more user friendly knife.

Picked up one of these in yellow delrin a couple weeks ago and then found another in brown micarta. AG Russell sowbelly, arrived in Monday's mail.

Mailman dropped these off at lunch time. My main collecting focus is American made stockman but I have a second addiction now with almost any decent Camillus I can find.

The muskrat is unused and nearly perfect except for a tiny bit of rust and a blade centering issue.

I have to say that the equal end cigar moose impressed me more than I thought it would, excellent centering, perfect f&f, and it even has half stops. Perfect size for the watch pocket.

The 716 Yello-Jaket is just one sweet knife. Easy opening with incredibly smooth walk and rock solid lockup. Got the box and paper with a it but not the original sheath hopefully I can find one someday.

Great knives. Especially like the equal end honey bone.

I looked in the 1988 brochure (1988 is stamped on back of the spey blade) and other catalogs around that time and didn't find it listed. I'm thinking these might be from left over parts for a similar knife they did for Remington, the Muskrat Bullet. Makes me wonder how many other uncatalogued Camillus jewels there are out there.

Got these two yesterday. GEC 06 “Pemberton” and the fixed blade is a Beretta designed by R.W. Loveless by Master Hattori. Quince wood and full tapered tang construction. Very nice.
