All About Pocket Knives

I've been curious about the quality and fit and finish of those multi blade Bulldogs for some time now. I really like the reverse etch they use on them. Thanks for posting.

Great looking knife QS, looks like appaloosa bone on my phone. I like it. I didn't anything of that quality but I'll try to make up in quantity. I been down with the crawdads and mud cats again.

dweb I have a 6 blader that is equally remarkable as today's 5 blader. Especially with the 6 blader I don't know how those Olbertz masters can escape even a little blade rub, but I guess that is why they are called master cutlers.

6 blades, that must be a pocket ripper. I have a 5 blade Schrade 858OT that Herman Williams put together for me. I was amazed there was no blade rub especially as he had to re-krink the blades by hand. It's 4-5/8" closed and weighs in at 6.4 ounces

My postman wore a red suit and had a big white beard today. He brought an old Robeson hawkbill. I think the model # is 2HC07 but old eyes are never sure. It is missing its bail.

Next up from Old Cutler, Mr Jim himself is a wonderful little Pukko. It is very traditional, light and fits the hand well. Along with the knife he added one of the little stick pens that he makes. This one is Cherry with a Maple band. Love them both.

And finally, made by our own ea42, an Eric's Jack. This one has been on my list and I really didn't think I would ever have a shot at one. But finally, a week or so ago one showed up on BF and I was fortunate enough to snag it. Came with box, bag, papers and original invoice from when it was purchased from Gunstock Jack. I like everything about it, especially for the maker. It is # 063. Do I sound pleased to get it? The buttons are all gone from my shirt.

Today brought me a Boker Copperhead. German made which I mention because they have knives made in other countries. Anyway, this is a nice little knife with everything as it should be. Soft half stops. This will see some pocket time as it is light weight, slender and I find the copperhead pattern very practical.

doglegg, that Eric's Jack is a real looker. Question: is that an older CSC or from the reconstituted company?

Roland, Just assuming the detente is hiden away in that metal on the back at the pivot point. My guess is that it’s a bearing from how smoothly it moves.
About the canvas. CK told me there was no way to just clean a spot of oil off the canvas. To go ahead and oil the entire surface, which I figured would be the answer. It may shed water but that canvas is dry and will absorb oil. Which is an issue since your hands have oil in them and you are bound to get oils from other things. I didn’t actually get oil directly on the canvas, it was on the micro towel I was using to oil the blade before I put it in the display case, so it transferred from cloth to cloth, it’s that dry.
It looks fine oiled, it’s darker and I think will be fine. Not sending it back or anything. I would still recommend it, but be aware.

It is from the older CSC, made in 2014 I think, at least that's when it was originally purchased. I think he made 100 of them. Thanks.

Mark have you ever had other Micarta stain from a drop of oil or from your hands ? I have not seen this happen which leads me to think the Viper Micarta must not be the regular Micarta. Anyone else have Micarta that stains easily ?

There are three different types of Micarta that I know of canvas, linen and paper. Canvas can stain easy.

Over time, if well used, canvas micarta will darken just from the natural oils in our hands.

QS, I missed that red copperhead on the way by. Great looking knife. And sounds quality as well.

Thanks doglegg. I only have a couple of Bokers and have been pleased with each of them. The scuttlebutt is that one definitely wants the German made-not just assembled there. It has also been claimed that the vintage Bokers were better than the current German models.Can't judge that but my recent models are a very good value.

Love a good Canal St doglegg, and that one has great looks. Very nice, congrats.

I will post some pictures of the before and after of this knife, if I can get the picture from CK to download here. It’s really more like it’s canvas covered. I haven’t seen anything like it before. It feels great in the hand, but I knew when looking at it that it would be an issue.
Will get this done later.

I cannot keep my Canvas micarta from changing color. It came a nice blonde, which I liked and wanted. But it quickly turned dark brown. Unavoidable. It also gets smoother and less grippy over time so I hit it with some 320 sand paper every few months, very light, just a quick brush over. Just the micarta, not the pins and bolsters, tape them off, the sanding makes the texture return somewhat, and the color lighten a bit. brings out the threaded pattern, but not original blonde canvas. Oil, sweat, grim, finger oils, all of them have stained my canvas and then some. Unavoidable. Still like the color and performance, just changed color on me. Par for the course.

Found these this morning: A Pal, a Queen (maybe?), an S.C.C., a Camillus and a big Boker.
These are from the Flea across Florida yard sale going on today and tomorrow.
