Received a Camillus 14 today and it's a dud. Contacted the seller and told him I want to send it back. Snap on the main blade is almost non-existent, even after oiling the joints and the main blade is about 1/8" short. Boo, hiss.

The good news is, I bought a Western W66 from Scott and it also came today. VERY satisfied with this knife. Thanks Scott. You're the best.

Paul, yes, it measures 2-3/4" closed OAL.

Nice Western 66 Jerry. I skin a deer with mine every few years just for old times sake.

Got into a trade with dogleg and he graciously offered several knives to choose from in addition to the actual object of the trade, the Queen Congress with a '76 stamp. I chose the old Schrade Walden 861 that Floyd described as "rough". I'm pleased with my 1st Congress pattern and am really tickled with the old 861. In addition there was a "bombing" that was very generous, check the "Bombs away" thread. Treefarmer

Here is the other half of that trade. Philip sent me a Schrade SS700 fruit knife marked Florida Department of Citrus and a Case 6208 1977 half whittler in black bone. Could not be more pleased. Per Philip the Case appears to be unused but before it came his way was poorly stored and so in need of some clean up. Thanks Philip. .

Bought this Black Box Winchester Gunstock model 2851 from 1988. Don't know if the scales would be called black bone. Did not have a Winchester or a gunstock. I think these were made by Queen. Seems to be good quality.

Jerry, take a good, close look at the date code on this L66. On my monitor, It "appears" to really be a "G". Many "G" knives are reported as "C" knives if the stamp has a lot of wear, as yours does. More "C" knives are reported/claimed to be "G" knives than really are "G"s.

IF it is a "G" and not a "C", it is "relatively" rare. Some models are frequently encountered, such as the W77/W75 boot knives. Others are occasionally seen, such as L66, H40, and L/648A/B models. Some are damn near non-existent - the W46-8 and W49 Bowies are examples.

I have seen and acquired a single "G" W46-8 and have seen and lost out on 2 authentic W49 "G"s. I haven't seen a "G" date coded W46-8 or W49 in the last 3 years.

I have 2 W49 "C" knives that were bought on fleabay because they were declared to be "G" date coded. Even after I messaged the sellers to double check that they whether they were "G" or "C" knives. When they got here, those 2 were very difficult to verify, but in the end each was a "C". A 3rd was so clearly a "C" that I could see it as soon as I opened the box and looked at it with no glasses on. That one went back as "not as described".

Very few "G" knives were made, in proportion to the number of knives made in other years by Western or Coleman/Western. 1983 was the last full year of Western production and many models were not made at full production rates or made at all. After Coleman bought Western, they went all out in 1984 ("H") and made a bunch of knives in every model they continued.

Wayne, I didn't even know there was a date code until you brought it up. I did a bit of studying on it using magnification and a flashlight and it appears to be a 'C' (1979 ?). Thanks for that bit of new to me information.

Edit: Although, I went back and looked and I have another picture that muddies the waters. Your opinion on this if you please. And these three. (Edit: four)

I don't really know what I'm doing when I buy vintage knives so I don't buy them very often. I somehow got a hankerin' for a few and came across some trusted sellers. Here's what I ended up with.

Pal Cutlery Jack. (not sure of the manufacture date but am interested in knowing) Queen #10 Jack. 1937-1945 but probably made during the war because of the steel liners. My first Queen older than 2003. Remington R363 that has seen its better days. I like the bone and the Equal End pattern.

Three nice ones Rick. I really like the bone on that Remington.

Great looking bones in there Railsplitter, especially that top one. Reminds me of a knife J1890 has posted. Sweet old bones as well on the Remington too.

Ivoryman, J1890 is one of those trusted sellers that I mentioned. I bought it from him.

Good mail day. First is a Bulldog 41/4" equal end Cattle King Stockman. This is a 1st generation BD from 1985.I have not decided whether the covers are stag or bone. Fairly sure it is bone. In either case 36 were made in either pattern.
Next is a 4th generation 4 1/4" trapper commemorating the Millenium. Only 60 of this pattern were made in stag. The F&F on this knife is particularly excellent.

I like that Western fixed blade Jerry, nice blade shape and a classic hunting knife for sure.
Also liking that gunstock Remington doggleg, thats a pattern I don't have and been eyeing lately.
Sweet looking Bulldog cattle king as well Quick Steel, some real character in those handles.
