Nice pic, Scott.
My brother just texted me this picture, first ear of the year from the sprouted corn we planted (refer to Page 9 of this thread). Getting tons of tomatoes and green beans now, my sister picked a dozen heads of cabbage for friends and family. Several years ago I bought my dad a Keen Kutter Kraut Cutter and we made sauerkraut that turned out perfectly. But we used about 4 dozen heads then, only planted a baker's dozen this year.

I can't say with certainty, but fairly sure it is a deformity caused by damage from one of the Bigfoot residents in the area.

Deer like to eat sunflowers, people like to eat deer.

Just thinking out loud.
I'm an old softy anyways.

Just acting like a tuff guy.
Maybe you can scare um off some how.

I used to pull weeds at a fressly planted orchard as a kid. The guy tied little net cloth bags of hair to the newer/smaller trees to keep the deer away.

Not sure if it was human or dog hair though.

Good idea, Tom. I heard a bar of soap like you get at a hotel works, they associate the soap smell with humans.

The deer pretty much ate all of the sunflowers on the far left row, there might be one plant that actually made it to bloom.

If it rains? Will the soap hurt the plants?

Supposedly not. I've heard you can irrigate with dirty dish water.

"The Thirty First of August"
No I did not work today,
So please do beg my pardon,
I was spending precious time,
With my dog out in the garden.
There are roses & sunflowers,
We could just sit there for hours,
Butterflies, birds & bees,
A few cheeries in the trees.
And It's ok, I asume,
If the weeds all choose to blum,
It's the least that I can do,
So my neighbors have weeds too.
Now it looks like April showers,
And it's been that way for hours,
But we did not get made wet,
And we did not break a sweat.
We just sat here a few hours,
With the birds & bees & flowers,
And there's no work we can do,
Till the weeds no longer blum.

Today is the first of Spring here and Wattle day our official flower. I have not seen any in bloom yet which is unusual, but i have heard from others that they are in full bloom in some parts of our state.

Cockscomb (Celosia argentea var. cristata) and Grape Tomatoes (Lycopersicon lycopersicum var. Moby Grape)
Cukes are plentiful this year but no pics to share, I'll try to correct that today.
Peppers were small in size and harvest. I tried a new location that really didn't work as planned.

Very nice, Tom, nice photos of some happy and healthy Cockscomb. That pic of the tomatoes is as professional looking as can be, it belongs on a magazine cover.
