All About Pocket Knives

Played hooky today and went to the monthly antique show and flea market at the fairgrounds. Ulster 3 3/8 jack with my favorite bone. Same handle die as a three blade I posted last week. Steel liners/bolsters/pins.

I picked this Ulster up at the Leheigh show yesterday.

As a truck driver I've only been able to get to one Flea Market so far (two different times) and NEVER see anything like these!

All those two blade jacks.... fantastic!!!

I have the dates as assigned by John Goins in his 1979 book "Pocket Knives Markings, Manufacturers and Dealers". It shows more tang stamps than his later works tend to.

What I need is some good clear shots of the stamps.
If anyone has good clear pics of Ulsters tang stamp, please email them to me at [email protected] and I will put them together and post them in the Research Section.

For the sake of being through and as accurate as we can be, if the knife you are taking the pic of has more than one tang stamp, please include all stamps on that knife.

Dale, have you been able to get any more information on the Ulster brand knives tang stamps and the years they were used? I have a couple of Ulster knives and would enjoy seeing a chart showing their tang stamps with their corresponding years of use. A chart would be a great help for future reference on Ulster knives that someone may be interested in buying or trading for. Thanks for any info you may have and want to share on the tang stamps. BTW there are some very nice Ulster knives posted on this thread.

Hey Aimus,
I haven't gotten any more info on Ulster yet. Just too many things going on.
I hope things slow up a bit and I can get caught up with some other projects so I can research Ulster tangs.
I am currently working on Schrade tang stamps and several repairs. I do want to make a list of the Ulster tang stamps, but it will be for a while before I have the time.

If any one has Ulster tang stamp pics they would like to share here please post them.
Maybe we can date them together and sort of set up our own guide.

Found this one today. Reverse side of tang on master blade stamped 3002. Dark wood handles.

I like that bar shield on ebony handles.
I have a similar pattern in my parts knives with one or two blades broken.
Ulster did a nice job with that knife.

No, I didn't get that knife. I couldn't have afforded it even had it been a Robeson.

But, I do know who bought it.

I think I've seen this pattern as a Keen Kutter too. Most likely made by Ulster as well, I think, in retrospect.

5 days since anyone has posted a new Ulster.
We can't have that, get to postin' boys!

Here are some Ulsters I picked up recently.

This Girl Scout I got at a flea market this weekend. I didn't even realize it was a GS until I cleaned it up. This is one case where I had to clean the knife. It was covered with paint, tar and drywall mud from the appearance and a few other unidentified substances. It took two hours to clean it. I tried to leave as much of the patina on the blades as I could. I was quite pleasantly surprised when I got all the junk off of the knife to see that it was an Ulster Girl Scout with beautiful bone handles. There is not a crack or chip that I could see in the handles. The long pull spear blade, the can opener and the cap-lifter/screwdriver all have the ULSTER/KNIFE/CO tang stamp with serif. The only blade not stamped is the punch, which was normal. The tang stamp on each blade with serif, is typical of the Ulster knives made when Dwight Divine or his sons owned Ulster. It was a pleasant surprise from the old flea market, a real diamond in the rough!


This Ulster 98 with the long pull on the clip blade has composite handles; an early plastic, that is softer than Delrin. It has peach seed jigging and was missing the shield. I glued a crack at the rocker pin and put on a shield. It makes a great EDC. Ulster had some nice carbon steel



This Ulster Stockman does not have a model number on it that appears to be the same as the #98 listed above. This knife has not been sharpened, indeed hasn't even been used. I cleaned the Cosmoline off the blades. There is some spiderwebing on the blades, which makes it difficult to read the etch on the clip blade. The etch says PROPERTY OF U. S. GOVT. Again it has a softer plastic on the handles than Delrin and has peach seed jigging. These handles have also shrunk a little bit at the bolsters. I don't think it's celluloid, just some sort of early plastic, definitely not Delrin. I estimate the date of this to be late 1940s to mid-1950s. I got this one on eBay recently. Does anyone know anything about these government contract knives?

To any or all of you Ulster folks. This info is going to be sketchy cause I can't remember all the particulars of a knife I saw today.
It was of course an Ulster, from the looks a really old one. All I could make out of stamp was Ulster over Knife. It was a single blade type of clasp knife. Really slim though. The end of handle had a pretty severe bend in it rather like the French lagioule or the Spanish NAVAJA. The handles appeared to be some type of dark wood, held on by three tiny birds eye rivets. Not knowing the Ulster brand well and the high asking price I just walked away. There has been some lingering regret and that is the reason for this question. Any one with ideas please post and who knows I may take another outing this week. It's getting near time for an early Christmas gift to myself anyway.

Here are two of ours. The second one is a Ulster Dwight Devine & Sons.

I picked this oldy up and was wondering if any of you have ever seen this pattern made by Ulster??? Too bad about the grinding on the blade but it still is an odd one I think. Knife is 5 1/4" closed and marked.
