All About Pocket Knives

Here's one, a penknife I picked up at an auction a while back and finally got around to researching it today. It is marked NATENBERG STRAUSS CO GERMANY on both blades. I only found one reference to this company in the AAPK forums so it is probably not very common. I think I paid $8 for it.

Per Goins, this company only existed circa 1922 – 1924. They were a company in Chicago that imported knives from Germany.

It was probably a quality knife in its day. The handles are tortoise shell (real or faux?) and the pins and liners are brass. There is even very fine file work on the liners. There’s still good snap on the blades.

An old office knife....This is the only knife I've ever seen made in Prussia....

Very nice! Goins says this stamp makes it 1883 - 1897, and his book has a short paragraph about the company.

Given the fact it has a country of origin stamped on it, I'm thinking 1891 - 1897.

RobesonsRme (Charlie Noyes) thought the stamp was possibly previously undocumented.

This 5-1/2" fruit knife/sausage sampler has a couple tang stamps on it that are noteworthy. The mark side stamp is SOLINGEN/CUTLERY/GERMANY The Solingen Cutlery Co. is listed in Goins' but not SOLINGEN/CUTLERY/GERMANY.

The pile side stamp is different from any others I have seen. It has the word 'ROSTFREI' above a foot with what appears to me to be a foot attired for soccer and a soccer ball. If anyone has any additional info on this company I would like to hear about it.

This is the mark of Bontgen & Sabin.

Here's a fairly rare one I picked up recently. Master blade is marked Rev-O-Noc. Other blades are all marked Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. Jerry D. posted another one here several months ago but you don't see them often. Goins says this stamping was used by Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. c 1905-1960 in honor of another member of the firm, Charles H. Conover. Rev-O-Noc being Conover, spelled backward.

Orvet, I have a knife with the same stamp and it is Bonsa Solingen Germany, check it out...cheers

Here's an old Meriden Cutlery Co, stamp.
The knife was made by Landers, Frary and Clark. Also the stamp is unique to L.F. & C. as it was produced in their factory after 1918. Goins.

The old Hardware knives are some of my favorites. Very unusual bone on the one made by Ulster.

Thanks guys. Tom the old Ulster knives at least the old toenails had that big course jigging.The back scale Color is more traditional than the front.

Not an uncommon brand but an uncommon stamp .

ScoutKnives, I have never seen that stamp before. Something else to look for.

I guess it is a scout knife and a camper? Cant tell.
