Got some better photos of the NY Knife Co Walden, Hammer Brand, Sleeveboard 3-3/8" whittler today... From what I can tell, the 3 finger tang stamp is circa 1938 - 1941.

Greedygulo, beautiful Bokers, the etch on the first one say it best! Dave, 3 great whittlers, really like the New York Hammer Brand! I think you are looking at the Imperial tang stamp chart. The New York Knife Co. Walden NY went out of business in 1931, so your Hammer Brand whittler is older than that. Imperial aquired the rights to the Hammer Brand stamp in 1936.

Dan! You are absolutely correct! I was looking at the Imperial tang stamp chart! My knife ignorance is showing again. Thank you so much for the correction! I will go search for the NY Knife tag stamp chart.

Thanks for reviving one of my favorite threads Mark. That is a dandy, and not many whittlers that size. Hard to tell from the pictures - are the handles ebony?

Yet another grand thread right from the beginning.... if I continue to find threads like this, my whiskers are gonna turn gray before I get to shave!

Well, I have one & only one to add & I didn't even know it was a whittler until I posted it to another thread only to have another AAPKer so graciously point it out to me .... It fell on hard times as can be seen by the pitting on the blades & backsprings before someone put some spit n' polish to it. Just the same.... I still really like the look of the handle & have grown quite fond of the pattern....

Hey KAW, Super nice old NYK there. Thats not just a whittler buddy BUT a Gunstock whittler. I have owned that pattern several times in my past all in different handle materials,,,Them handles are outstanding for that pattern,,,Beautiful knife Sir

That's interesting. In my mind that wasn't a gunstock.

Neat old knife KAW ... but I agree with Keith - and with all due respect Mark the pattern frame does not have that gunstock shape to me ... the 2nd post of this thread on page 1 has a gunstock whittler among a few others posted on other pages by Charlie... to me this is more of a serpentine pattern and while it has the split wedge on the back spring in my opinion (or my 2 cents) makes me think of a stockman especially with the spey blade as one of the secondaries....

I had thought that too at first Lee.... but then a fellow AAPKer pointed out that on a Stockman the spey blade is usually paired with the master clip.... not at the other end.... ....as far as the handle is concerned I, too, thought it was considered a serpentine.... but what do i know.... I'm just a newbie ....need to hear more from the experts.... IOW, let's stir the pot some more.
