Hi Johnnie, TJ,
Most folks call it a whittler, but it is not technically a whittler. The definition of a whittler is that the main blade rests on BOTH of the backsprings.....this is not the case with the Schrade 863 or the Camillus 72, which TJ is referring to......the main blade only rests on one of the backsprings. Both of these knives are set up more like a cattle knife. I think Schrade called the 863 a "Balloon Pattern", while I think I saw where Camillus did call their model 72 a whittler.....even though it is not technically a whittler.
An interesting exception to the rule - I recently bought a Schatt & Morgan Hump Back Lock Back whittler.....and due to the unusual design, it only has one spring on the main blade.....so it is technically not a whittler? I think it is a whittler....and I don't think too many folks would argue against it being a whittler, even though it doesn't meet the strict defintion.
By the way, TJ, I have a pile of the Camillus 72's laying around as well....they are all-around good knives.

I've only got one of the Cammie 72's, though it's not marked as such. It is the Boy Scout that Orvet rehandled in red bone for me. And your're right, they are great all-around knives.

That's just crazy talk.
That's one heck of a pick up. A USA Schrade for $12.00? Call a cop 'cause you stole it.

Really K-nice K-nife Johnnie. With all of its faults, I kinda wish that I had kept the one that I bought a while back. It was the same one as yours. Well, not the exact same one, but one just like it.

................why did you get rid of it?

There were a number of things. The first I noticed was that the radius of the bail was really off and the bail sat non-centered to the knife. Both the main blade and secondary were scratched up and the blade polishing was not up to par for a premium knife at a premium price. That's kind of what I remember but there may have been other issues.

I like it, Johnnie. For some reason a lot of guys don't seem to like these, but I think it's a pretty neat old timey looking pattern. It's sure to start some conversations when you pull it out of your pocket, too! You seem like the kinda guy who could carry this one off real well!
I like that fat clip blade, too.
Have you opened a beer with it yet?
