Jerry, I just enjoy the old battle rifles - that SMLE has already made it's way into my permanent rifle collection. Here is one I have owned much longer, a 1943 Smith-Corona M1903A3 in superb condition. This picture was taken a year ago; I get together with several of my old Army Guard buddies a couple of times a year at a local range to shoot. We bring a little bit of everything and plenty of ammo - spend the day burning powder together. We have a MSG, several old Colonel's and LTC's (they're a dime a dozen!) and an occasional BG (several live in the area). It is nearly as much fun as we had serving together. I have a Yugoslavian M48A, still new in the cosmoline that I need to clean (I've put it off cause I know from experience that is a real PIA) but I've already got some 8mm Mauser to run through it, so that's my next project. Eventually I want to add one of the old Russian bolt guns like you have - there seem to be plenty of nice ones around lately - must be a newly imported batch of them. OH

Colonel, that cosmoline is really fairly easy to get off. Just get yourself one of the big GI cans and an immersion heater. Fill it up with water, light the immersion heater and get the water good and hot. Dunk your rifle in the hot water and all that cosmoline will come right off (or at least that's how we did it in boot camp with our brand new M-14s). Chase all the water off and out of the rifle with some WD-40 and you are good to go.

done some tradin' this morning and came home with this Lil' 1976 Winchester 290 Delux 22 automatic rifle --- she shoots em' all 22 shorts,longs & long rifle **** the engraving / checkering is ""AWESOME"" on the multi-colored monte carlo, walnut stock --- has had about 100 rounds down the tube (says the original owner ) -- he had the box,but it literly fell in pieces,when we opened her up --- the Bushnell scope was added in 1976,when he was given the rifle for Christmas !!!!!! said the rifle has been in his safe since late 70's / early 80 --- have a great day,my friends,Monk

Thanks guys !!!!____ from what I have found out***___ only made from 1963-1976 -- they didn't make many with the ""fancy stock"" --- seems you need to keep it clean (to prevent jammin') & keep an eye on the barrell nut working loose most guys suggest a few drops of loctite on the nut threads and ""shoot away"" ---

did manage to find some 22LR Federal Copper-Plated Hollow Points at Academy Sports for $3.99 per box of 50 --they only let me have 2 boxes (so the wife buys me two more ) --- a good wife is almost as "handy" as a good pocket knife ______________________

...........I thought .22 ammo was overpriced until I got my .44-40 henry......now , when I go shoot I take a bucket and sit it on the ground, and every time I pull the trigger, I put $1.35 in the bucket!!!................................. .............................

Nice Monk - that is the second or third nice, mint Winchester you've posted here in the last few months - you must be living right! I really like the pressed checkering; one of my favorite rifles is a Winchester M88 308 WIN that has very similar pressed checkering. If you want the catalog page from the year of manufacture I can copy it for you and post - I think I've got most of them back to about 1960.

I've been taking out my MILSURP rifles, cleaning, and taking pictures - here is a M-1 Carbine I photographed yesterday. I inherited this one last year, but I was the assembler of it 15 years ago (+/-) when lot's of MILSURP parts were coming into the country (something our current "leader" stopped). This one has a newly made Springfield Armory receiver, WW-II era small parts and a Viet Nam era barrel. OH

Very KoooooooL .22 Monk. .22's are a lot of fun. Really diggin' that M-1 OH, I think that I could get used to having one of those. Till then, my Mini-14 will have to do.

part of the country. Shorts impossible to find.

Harold, I hadn't seen shorts in the shelf around here for a long time, until the great shortage! Now shorts seem to be everywhere. I've even bought plain ol longs in the height of the the shortage and I'd never seen a box of them before.

LR is easier to find here now, but you still run into a sold out shelf occasionally. I sure wish prices would come down though.

LR is easier to find here now, but you still run into a sold out shelf occasionally. I sure wish prices would come down though.

I love 22 shorts! they're great squirrel medicine, and relatively quiet to boot. Like all 22 they're very rare here.

The only .22 that I own. A Model 26 Stevens Crack-Shot. Has a falling block action. Over-all length is a little under 33". Shoots pretty straight too. I had it's big brother, a "Favorite" but it went away in a trade a long time ago.

I have dad's old Stevens Favorite. It would take a lifetime to eat up all the hogs, squirrels and rabbits that old rifle has killed. The ejector "tongue" is worn out but she still shoots as accurately as the person pulling the trigger is capable of.
